Quite a while back a friend of ours whose parents are breeders accidently got two of their dogs in the same area (keeping them apart because the female was in heat and younger than they wanted to breed her) and by the time they knew it was too late. Thankfully, since they wanted to hold off on the breeding, they were relieved to find out she didn't end up getting pregnant. But they tell me that with the quality of the two dogs, which they were planning on breeding later anyway, if she'd gotten pregnant than the puppies would have been anywhere from $500 to $2000 each dependant on the quality of the pups. Is this true? They're purebred German Shorthairs, btw, show dogs with all the paperwork. It just amazes me to think "oops, looks like there'll be a litter of $2000 puppies!"

It's "oops" because they are obviously more concerned with their dogs' well-being than with producing a litter of pups for the money.

Quality puppies in my breed go for around $1200 - 1500, but I wouldn't want an "oops" litter either. When I have a litter of pups I want them to be from a carefully-planned breeding from parents who are of an appropriate age, quality and condition.

Good breeders aren't in it for the money, in fact they usually spend more on their dogs than they get back from selling puppies. They are more interested in producing a quality, healthy animal, and the well-being of their dogs is top-priority.

This german shepherd must have won a lot of titles for its pups to be worth $2000, in my opinion!

The top elete of the show ring do have pups worth that much, but "chamian pedigree" don't. Its the "showdog" (specifically show WINNER) that adds the value not the registration paper. If their dogs are worth that much I guess you don't much of your friend parents, they are allways at a dog show!
