My cousin did that too until he was 13. Eventually, he just got over it and stopped doing it. Maybe the same will happen for your child.

Thumb sucking (like pacifiers) is a habit that is hard to get rid off in a child. Unless he or she decides to stop it, there really is no easy way. If you scold them or take other preventative actions, they wil ldo it on the sly.
The best thing to do is gently remind them that sucking the thumb is not a good thing. Sometimes ignoring it completely will make them stop.

I will not be giving you steps on what to do. Your doctor or pediatrician could give you better suggestions. However, I suggest you to check this site so that you'll know more about thumb sucking, and so you'll not get too frustrated :)

Just a piece of thought, if a child does not stop on his own accord, whatever you do, he will not stop, even though you scold him all the time. Think of something that will motivate him to stop without forcing him. Remember to be patient all the time :)

Some will say ignore it, but I believe it is a form of security, kinda like Charlie Brown's buddy with the blanky. My niece sucked her thumb until, the nail became so infected and almost lost it. Its to your own discretion, but my sister finally had to resort to putting peragoric on her my niece's thumbs, and trust me, she never put them in her mouth again.

thumb sucking in this case could be a sign of insecurity which it generally is! distract the child, spend more time, and may be a therapist(not a peadiatrician) could help u find the cause, all the best!

My sister & I did this nasty habit too. My 3 kids NEVER sucked their thumbs. They all have BLANKETS for their comfort zone.
Just have to give him something else besides his thumb. Toy, Blanket, etc. OR if he wants to suck his thumb, MAKE HIM WASH HIS HANDS EVERYTIME HE WANTS TO PUT IT INTO HIS MOUTH!!! Taking time out of his day might just get him off this habit.

Put either lemon, hot sauce, or something that tastes very sick on his thumb, he'll taste it, and would stop sucking his thumb.
