SLR = Single Lens Reflex.

It allows you to view the image through the lens that is used to capture the image, thereby giving you a very close aproximation of what the final image will be. If it's out of focus in your viewfinder, it'll be out of focus on the film (or memory card)

Generally you can make use of interchangeable lenses, thus giving you more control over depth of field (how much of the picture is in focus).

Slr cameras are the digital cameras that look like the film cameras...common models are the nikon d50 and the cannon digital rebel

Single Lens Reflex - that's the old type of camera, the one with one lens, that we used to put rolls of film in, I still have a couple haven't used them in years, digi is great
