Whenever someone my dog is familiar with goes outside (even for just a few seconds), he'll start whimpering. I've heard something like this... Seperation anxiety?? How do I get him more comfortable with us leaving?

I'm afraid of when school starts. We'll be gone for a long time and he'll just be at the door whimpering. Thanks for any answers! They are very appreciated.

If it's a puppy then he just has to get used to the family coming and going. You should practice it for a few seconds at first, then go away for longer periods of time. I've also heard it's not good to overexcite the dog when you come back.

If the dog gets older and is still having issues with being away from you, then you are right, it's called separation anxiety. If it is a HUGE issue with your dog then sometimes it's best to go to a trainer. I've seen dogs with major separation anxiety and it's not pretty.

It is normal for them to get a little anxious when you leave at first. When I first got my dog and I'd leave for school everyday, he'd wait at the door (he hates being away from me...but he doesn't completely freak out, which is how I think a lot of dogs are). As I went to school more often, he got used to it and whenever he sees me leave in the morning, he just lays in his bed and doesn't care. By the way if you're going to be gone for long periods of time, I hope your dog has a way to go to the bathroom.

Your puppy will eventually get used to people coming and going. You've got to remember that the puppy doesn't know if you're coming back and that's pretty frightening. Remember that he saw all his brothers and sisters go away to never return in most cases. Once he realizes that you're not going away forever he'll be just fine.

Maybe get another dog so he can play fight and wrestle with it, dogs love to play.
Dogs live in packs and your part of his pack in his eyes. you need another dog so they can sort out who is the lowest in the pack and always have someone to boss around or be bossed around by.
Basically he'll always have a member of the pack with him
