You don't have to come from the military to get a job with the FBI, but it will help. There is a preference system that gives you a little extra boost if you're a veteran. As someone said, the FBI is pretty competitive. But take a look for yourself--you can fill out an application to become a special agent online, and it'll tell you all the pre-requisites and explain it much better than I can.

Other than that, you have to realize that working in special operations isn't for everyone. You don't just volunteer and show up--you have to try out and be selected. And it's damned tough to survive the tests, let alone the pipeline of training that you have to go through to get to where you're actually doing the job.

By the way, there's a bit of counter terrorism to be had from within the military too. I'm going to sound like a mooning 15-year old, but SEAL Team 6 is famous for it, along with Delta Force. As a matter of fact, the Air Force's Office of Special Investigations (like CID or NCIS) has a specialized counter terror unit called AST. I wouldn't be surprised if there were other small segments like that in the other services.

If you're going to join up, go try to go in as an MP/SP or someone in OSI/CID/NCIS--that should help your resume when it comes time to talk to the Feds.

You don't have to join the military to be employed by the FBI. If you plan to join the military, something in intelligence or the military police would be help full. Air force are known as the smart guys who do technical stuff. The Army is good lots of jobs, the Marines if you qualify to be the few the proud and a little gung ho, and like the tough things. The Navy has Navy seals and police jobs. The army also has elites, the green berets, army rangers. The choices are unlimited and getting your education was a great start. Good Luck!!

I would not join the military to get into the FBI.

If you want to do something else before applying, I would go on to law school and graduate law school after your accounting degree.

If not law school, go back and get a computer degree also.

Most of thier agents seldom use thier weapons and most are doing research on suspects using accounting, law and restoring computer files.

While they have some high profile swat type teams, this is only the very smallest parts of thier training.

You do not have to join the military at all. Go to the FBI website and look at the job requirements for the job you want. You might also want to call and ask them for their suggestions.

The FBI prefers prior law enforcement experience. I have been a cop for 17 years. I am presently a lieutenant and have been rejected by the FBI. It is a very hard organization to get into.

Study intelligence, police work, military operations, surveillance, escape and evasion. These courses are only available in police and military trainings. Thus, you have to become a cop or a soldier first.
