Actually, I think it depends on how responsible your son is at 22. Being that he is 22 and not just out of high school, what has he been doing for the last 4 years. Has he been partying or has he been working to support himself? If he lives at home, do you make him pay rent?
He is an adult. But if he has been working hard for 4 years and needs a little bit of help to get where he is going, tell him that you'll help him here and there, but he needs to make his own way. You could also offer to let him live at home for free while he is in college. There is financial aide that is available to him to pay for tuition that he can pay back. He can work and go to school to pay for his own books, etc. He is an adult after all and you raised him hopefully to be self sufficient. It always means more when you do it yourself.
You raised your child and sometimes its hard to know when you need to step back and allow them to do it themselves, even college. Help him, but don't do it for him.
Take your well deserved vacation and pray that he make good choices and works hard for he wants.
Good Luck!

Why dont you set up an education fund? Use some of the money for that and add some amount every year. If you start early and you are consistent every year you can secure your child's future and do some traveling with the rest of it.

I personally would spend it on travel. Your son is 22 years old and should be able to get grants and school loans which he can pay back when he graduates and gets a job. You did your job,now let him do his.

Travel. It seems to me at 22, if he really wanted an education he would have been working and saving to do that. At 22 he should have had his own place and life by now.
I was working while in high school and I saved and went to school. I know that I earned my own way in life like a man should. Get that boy out of diapers. TRAVEL, HAVE FUN, ENJOY YOUR LIFE. It is up to him to have the balls to make his own way.

From my own experiences, I think that young adults apply themselves more in school if they are paying for their own education. He is 22-years-old. He is an adult, he can take out loans and pay for college himself. It will motivate him to do well in school, and motivate him to be successful in his career when he graduates, because he will have to pay back the loans. Speaking for myself, I was never an exceptional student in high school (B student). Then when I went to college, and I was paying, and I knew my future depended on it I got straight A's and graduated with a 4.0. My sister did the same. I don't think you should feel guilty about this. Go and enjoy your life now that your children are grown.

I'd spent the money for the son and ask him to support a better travel package when he's working later
