According to Hinduism it is because we are in the Kali Yuga and that this is the time when we are at our worst behavior. The Kali Yuga began in 3150 BCE according to Hinduism and as it continues our behavior can get worse and worse. It lasts for 425,000 years (atleast that's the teaching).
However, despite this disparaging news within the Kali Yuga it is said that within each Yuga (Era) that there mini-yugas that happen. The translation of the Yugas is usually Golden-Silver-Copper-Iron. Kali is the Iron Era, but within it are Golden times, Silver times, Copper times, and then Iron times. These are usually ever 425 years (I believe) and they rotate starting with the Golden at the beging of the Kali Yuga in 3150BCE.
Now before you start thinking that this still doesn't sound all that wonderful, Hindus say that this is actually the best time to be because of how easy it is to become enlightened and reach moksha. In each Yuga there are certain things that have to be done and in the Kali Yuga the task towards enlightenment and moksha is simply chanting the divine name which will focus our minds on the divine and thus awaken us from our ignorance that we are all seperate and make us realize that we are all one and interconnected and connected to the divine and that continuing to do this will lead to moksha (reunion with the divine). So what name do you chant? According to Hinduism: whatever name you associate with the divine (God). So if you worship Krishna, chantt Krishna's name. If the name you associate with God is Jesus, chant Jesus's name. And so on. It's all the same God as far as Hindus are concerned, just different perspectives and approaches to God.. The Bhagavad Gita has a line that basically says "if you'll but love me and keep your mind fixed on me then you shall come to me." And that's the point Hindus try to bring home. If you keep your mind focused on God (which the best way is just to keep God's name at the front of your mind) and you'll do this because you love God...then to God you will go.
The Kali Yuga is just part of nature, so don't look at it as if God is testing us. God isn't testing us, it is just part of the nature of the way the universe works that God created as far as Hindus are concerned.
But anyways, that's how Hindus explain why people are selfish, full of ego, and jealous and violent and why even in this time there are times when it is less and times when it is more.
Whether you accept the answer or not, that's one of the explanations Hindus have (there are a few others, too, but the one I mentioned is the most popular).
The other basic belief is that it is because we have all gotten lost in the maya (illusion) that we are seperate, that we are our egos. We should then strive to shed our ignorance and realize that we are all interconnected to each other, to everything in the universe. That we should realize that each of us carries the divine spark within us that manifested out of God and that we are not seperate from God. Thus we should strive to see God in everyone and everything and to treat it with the same dignity, respect, and reverence that we treat God. By doing this we let go of our ego which is focused on only the self, the body, it is the "I". That's the second most popular answer by Hindus.

The bible says that in the last days, you wont be able to tell when one season begins or when the other ends.
The other night it was 50 degrees outside quite cool for a summer night.
The bible also says that men will be lovers of themselves, children will be disobedient and the list goes on.
Til this day, I cant tell you whether the bible is truly a book inspired by a supreme being but somethings recorded in it are proven to be true.
The world is forever changing. Some people learn to take care of themselves and still be respectful and mindful of others while some people get angry at everyone because they face difficulty in adapting or are unable to achieve certain goals.

Because it's in our human nature to control and have everything for ourselvers and thus we have nothing more to give. Some people thing that one person is for them and them only... here comes the jealosy from talking to a person of oposite sex. Jealousy also comes from the desire to have more than your friend/neighbour.
In conclusion... it's easier to be jealous that to love. But if love isn't based on a hard foundation, then it will lead to jealousy.

2Pe 2:2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
Many people think they are Christians. Does this mean that they are Christians in God's sight. If people seek out of life what is best for themselves they will fall short of the Glory of God. Read Matthew 25:32 - 46.

I noticed that there are much, much more people on yahoo answers who are desperately trying to deny existence of God than those who actually try to defend their religious stand. Here’s my opinion:
People simply love to worship things instead of being free like the birds.
Something changed in the year of 175 because since that year they stopped killing Christians. Priests at that time hid some facts from people in order to please authorities hungry for ruling and to put themselves in better material position. Jesus said that only those whose heart is not hardened in sin can understand, meaning only those who don’t look at the world via material prism can understand this faith. De Vinci’s Code is work of a pure atheist who is thinking purely materialistically but who gave some correct points about the Church. Real Christians are not wearing long shiny dresses and golden Crosses. They live among us as modest, common citizens; those that you meet once in life but you memorize them immediately because something about them is so pleasant and kind. They are those that are happily whistling in a large queue at the supermarket or patiently wait for you to move your car without pointing the finger because they have peace and they are free of all obsessions and they enjoy in every minute without any fears because they discovered God. 10 commandments are for our sake, not for the sake of somebody who felt powerful when bringing them. If someone doesn’t understand this faith, he should look in his heart and see if he is actually a good person. It is not possible to buy the stairways to heaven or to cash out for your sins. Tell me if it’s easy to refuse a well paid job over a small time business that gives you opportunity to watch your children grow and have enough money only for basic standards. Many of our fathers did. That is why I’m happy and don’t need drugs. If some one is not strong enough to take the path of Christianity he should think again when he wants to judge others who are.

the midsection can in no way be organic residing in this international till all of us understand the perfect peace. We might desire to love ourselves "rather a lot" in a healthful thank you to love yet another to settle for any transformations, yet we are able to continuously have imperfect peace till we are confronted with actual loss of life or a considerable religious shift. cheers

THERE NEEDS A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF RELIGION OR SPIRITUALITY IN ONE'S LIFE. A LITTLE PRAYER A DAY, PARTS OF A DAY HELP US ANCHOR OURSELVES ON THE TRUE VALUES OF LIFE. WE BECOME STRONGER AS A PERSON AS WELL EVEN WHEN WE SEE SO MANY THINGS THAT SOMETIMES WE OURSELVES CAN NEVER FATHOM WHY THEY ARE HAPPENING THE WAY THEY ARE HAPPENING. LOOK INWARDS IN YOURSELF AND STRENGTHEN THYSELF. SAY THE PRAYERS THAT YOU FONDLY SAID WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG, OR SOMEONE TAUGHT WHEN YOU WERE GROWING UP. FIND SOLACE IN THEM AND PLEASE FORGIVE OTHERS IF YOU CAN AFTER YOU HAVE FOUND THE STRENGTH AND THE COURAGE FOR DOING SO
