Police say they have disrupted a major plot to blow as many as20 planes over UK and US cities with explosive devices smuggled aboard as hand luggage. Police are have arrested 20 people in London - the culmination of a covert counter-terrorist operation lasting several months.
Passengers trying to board international flights from the UK are not being allowed to carry on normal hand luggage.
Sky News' Crime Correspondent Martin Brunt said there were concerns that certain explosives,
possibly liquid, could be missed during x-ray screening of hand luggage.
Brunt said the threat was thought to be imminent and those arrested were mainly young, British-born Asian men.
He said the plan allegedly involved people boarding flights and detonating explosives on planes over UK and US cities.
The Home Secretary John Reid said the alleged plot was a "major threat" to bring down a number of planes.
The Home Office's level of security - indicating public risk - has been raised from 'severe' to 'critical'.
The swoop followed a pre-planned intelligence led operation by the Met's anti-terrorist branch and security service.
A police statement said: "This is a major operation which inevitably will be lengthy and complex. We will provide further information as soon as possible."
Lengthy queues at airports have been reported and a Transport Department spokesman said delays were inevitable.
"Passengers are being asked to allow themselves plenty of extra time. These additional security measures will make travel more difficult for passengers, particularly at such a busy time of the year."
There is only one solution to the problem...kick tham ALL out.

Domestic news agency Press Association quoting unnamed senior police sources said majority of those arrested were believed to be of Pakistani origin but most, if not all, were British.
Whoever it is, the better get it right. First I heard Muslims. Something doesn't feel right to me, but one thing I am certain of
THERE IS NO REASON TO GIVE UP YOUR SOVEREIGNTY OVER THIS.

The question is whether they are the first native-born generation of the immigrants, which is the demographic bombers seem to be recruiting.
I'll watch the story with interest as it unfolds.
OK, that was freaky. I went to 'news' expecting this to be on the front page.
Nothing.
I put in 'London' and 'bomb' and only got stories about the metro explosions.
I had to go to the BBC to get this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/4778575.stm

Who cares as long as they were caught. What worries me is that it took several months to arrest them, if they'd been more organised then a dozen planes and around 4,000 people (on the planes) and many more on the ground would be dead and for what? Some crazy notion that one religion is better than another? or the USA wants to retain oil access?
Do these people really think that killing innocent people helps their cause? If they do then please listen .. NO IT DOES NOT
