I have been dieting my male tabby for years. It is a hard process! First of all, I recommend Science Diet Weight Control or Science Diet Indoor Cat food. Then, on the bag it tells you how much to feed your cat per day based on how much your cat weighs and whether you are trying to have your cat loose weight or maintain weight. Then, stick to a strict diet and measure your cat's food out every day. It helps cats who tend to overeat to have several small meals during the day to better simulate regular eating habits. (Cats like to munch throughout the day, but if your cat is like mine, he probably can't control himself/herself). Also, stop feeding your cat wet cat food and any human food at all. Wet food has more fat and calories - dry food is also better for your cat's teeth. One last thing: find some toys your cat likes to play with and devote some time every day to play. Good luck, have patience, it will take time! My cat lost 5 pounds on his diet (23 pounds to 17). Also, make sure you talk with your vet. It's always good to get a professional opinion on your cat's weight. I only recommended Science Diet because it is what my Vet recommended to me.

I don't think I'd say that 12 lbs is too heavy for a cat...unless it has a really small body frame........my kitty weighs about that much and he's 8 yrs old..............I don't know about any particular food really helping but you could just start cutting down the portions she gets and that might help.........maybe a little more play time for her to burn some of it off......

They do make special diet food for cats. I've seen it at the pets stores.

Scale back a little on how much you feed your cat. Read that label on the cat food bag, and talk to your vet.

I see so many overweight animals. It's just as bad for them to be overweight as it is for humans. It is cruel to let your cat be fat and overweight. However, if you choose to be overweight, don't force that upon your cat.

Do not commence a diet in a cat without veterinary advice. Ask your vet the best diet for your cat based on her needs. It is dangerous to put any animal on a diet without veterinary supervision, particularly cats who can suffer hepatic lipidosis, pancreatitis, blindness and various other medical conditions. Please, do not try any homemade diets, see you vet.

you should take your cat to the vet to rule out any medical reason for her to be overweight. then if she is healthy decrease her food by 10%. If a cat looses weight too fast, it screws up their liver.

I wouldn't do anything until I spoke to my vet. See what they say about it. You should be able to see a dog or cat's waist. If it's really thick in that area, then it probably is too heavy, but check first with your vet. before you do anything.
