On a TV show, I saw a cake with whole strawberries baked into the cake. (I think it was a wedding cake). Is this possible with store bought cake mixes? Can I just add strawberries and plop it in the oven?

Thanks to all the smart people for their answers. I actually did it with a store bought cake mix and adding whole strawberries worked fine. No mess or ooze as some had said.

Yup I used to make it myself, you take white cake mix make it like the box says and just add some freshly diced or sliced strawberries before pouring into the baking pans.

If you want a strawberry flavored cake with fresh strawberries in it; then you mix the white cake mix with a box a regular strawberry jello mix. Mix it well till your dry cake mix is pink then go by the directions on the box for the cake mix and add the fresh strawberries last.

Ive done both and both come out great. You actually can use white cake mix and any flavor jello for any flavor cake.

You can, but when I tried it, I ended up with a nasty mess.

The moisture from the berries leaked out into the surrounding cake, and made mushy areas around each berry. The strawberries also got all mushy and nasty. I am sure if you made a cake from scratch, you could fiddle with it until you knew what ingredients to leave out to combat that, but I have only tried it with cake mix, and it wasn't pretty.

My advice, I am sorry to say, is to just slice the berries and put them on the top of the cake after it is cooled, or after it is frosted.

strawberries are generally pureed and added to the batter if you want to bake them.. reduce the water by about 1/2 cup.
otherwise, most of the time strawberries are sliced and added on top after baking, because they taste better that way and why go through all the extra work?

I would think they would add a lot of extra moisture, making the cake soggy. Perhaps if you reduced the amount of water added...?

Yes you could. But it will ooze out liquid.
