It so turned out that the Laptop purchased was installed with Windows xp Service Pack 1 counterfeit version.
Given this can one acquire(buy) an Original Windows xp latest version and install it in the Laptop?
How to go about it in India?

yes all you need to do is buy a licensced copy of windows from any Microsoft Certified reseller....or go to microsoft.com and search for local resellers in your area. then format your laptop and install using the bundled disc. also inform microsoft as well as yourlaptop provider about the pirated version of windows. its a punishable crime.

I believe that the license is all that counts. The CD is the same in all versions. I would think that you can buy a legal copy and just enter that serial number. Microsoft should tell you the answer. They have a toll free number.

ofcourse u can..... the operating system is just software and can be replaced .... so dont worry... u can however get a counterfiet versions that work from thailand and in many other places.Cheers
