I think it goes against the entire concept of a uniform to have people choosing willy-nilly for themselves what constitutes acceptable head-gear while in uniform. Next thing you know, we'll have 18-year old punks claiming that wearing a baseball cap backwards is protected religious expression.

You want to wear religious symbols under your uniform, go ahead, but no one should be wearing head-gear other than what's issued.

We're here to protect democracy, not practice it.

I was in the Navy for a few years, and as I recall, we could wear one religious medallion in uniform, so long as it didn't show. Headgear was definitely out, as it would have altered the standard uniform. I personally think wearing a necklace or ring with a religious symbol is okay, but if you allow, for example, a turban, what would stop somebody from saying wearing no hat on my bald head is religious(like a skinhead) The uniform for military is a standard form of dress so that everyone else in the service knows at a glance your rank and job. If you allow some people to alter their uniform, then there is no standard anymore. Confusion would reign.

This is going to be my personal opinion. The US military uniform is just that. Our uniform. Just because I played hockey, does that allow me to wear a hockey helmet. There are reasons why our military has traditions and disciplines. And wearing a headgear for religious reasons. I think you should think about what do you want to accomplish? Just because I am catholic doesn't mean I couldn't practice my religion. And please take no offense but I do not believe a religious headgear is going to stop a bullet. Started my military career in 1976 and ended in April this year. But again this is just my opinion.

First I want to say from a moderate Republican thank you for your service to our country. I have the upmost respect for you and your family. Part of me wishes that I would have served in the military. I don't believe that you should have anything visible that promotes certain religions or faiths. The military uniforms people so that they do a specific job aside from politics and religion. Off duty, you should be able to do what you want as long as it doesn't affect your oath to this country. Stay safe.

My political views: Seen as leftist
My humane views: Centrist

Frankly, I believe that people need faith. Whether that's faith in a god, or faith in their abilities, people need faith.

Sometimes to give people that extra boost they need something to wear to remind themselves. I have a similar... accessory. Faith is important. Religious or not, it is.

People should be able to wear things like that. Liberties in the armed forces should be strict to keep discipline but loose enough to let them be people.

As for headwear.. like turbans. Out of combat sure, and as long as it doesn't alter the standard uniform that's fine. By that I mean, as long as it's more like a head-wrap that's tight enough to fit under a helmet.
