Do you notice that the 24hours retail shop has this special naming?

It is an advertising gimmick called subliminal messaging. The trick is to plant the small "n" in your sub consciousness and allow your brain to lead you to their establishment. However, it does not work on everyone.

I think it's just a quirk of graphic design - if you go to http://www.7-eleven.com/ you can see that the little 'n' is in line with all the other letters in 'ELEVEN'.

But because the capital 'N' is wider than most other letters (so are M, W, etc, for that matter), they opted to use the small 'n' but made it the same height as the rest of the letters. So it's just a visual thing - no other elaborate reasons for it!

Good question though - hadn't really noticed it before! :o)

Riddle me this, why is it called 7-Eleven and not 24/7? They're always open 24 hours.

Perhaps the 'n' just fits into the design better than the 'N' does?
Very interesting!
