There isn't a difference. Just because the "general population" believes things doesn't make them so. What individuals in a group believe and what "the group" believes are NOT equivalent. Statistics don't apply to individuals and can't predict ANY individual behavior. By the same token, individuals (here at Yahoo Answers or anywhere) can't say what "people think" or why they think it. They can only answer what they think and why they think it. The "general population" is a group, and groups can't answer questions on Yahoo Answers. This is one of many misunderstandings of statistics that occur because statistics isn't taught at the middle/high school level, so people get the idea that statistics can be used to predict or define on an individual level, when they CAN'T. Straight people aren't attracted to every person of the opposite gender they meet and gay people aren't attracted to every person of the same gender they meet. "When Harry Met Sally" is a MOVIE, for heaven's sake, not real life! There is no reason that two people MUST become sexually involved with each other because each is the gender the other prefers. This applies to gays, straights and bisexuals. And what about bisexuals? They can't have friends at all? It's been my observation that the people most likely to have sex with people who are just "friends" are gay men, BTW. WAY more often than men and women. But it still doesn't predict anything.
