Kodak are AWSOME! I own a eashshare Z740 its not cheap around $298 at walmart I think, well it was but its preformace is AWSOME! Takes professional pics, with just a point and click!
I reccomend getting a re-furbished camera, I am currently purchasing one and they are warrantied and preform the same as new at 50% the cost! Im getting the P850 its normally about $500 for $300 !
Try www.usanotebook.com they have cameras there refurbished or just google refurbished *and the camera u want here* and ull get a great deal!

hi, personally i go for Panasonic Lumix models. Though many pple are saying Canon is a much better offer. However here're things i look out for when buying a compact digicam:

1) size
2) battery life span
3) lens (normal, Carl Zeiss, Leica...?)
4) Zoom (3X, 7X...)
5) Navigation of menus/ buttons on camera
6) picture nature (reddish or yellowish)?
7) LCD screen (2.5" for greater view)

Cameras nowadays have improved greatly due to the digital technology... Sony, Canon, Panasonic and others are using great digital processing chips to process the pictures, so they're about the same. We cannot pinpoint whose processing technique is the best.

So, we look into other "advantages" that are equipped with the camera.

Check http://www.amazon.com and compare how many megapixels you get versus the price. The more megapixels the better the picture.
