By all means do not put an aspirin in it, then you really will be in pain. That is an old wives's tale. Here is my experience. Gently brush; rinse with warm water; now mix 1 tsp of salt in very warm water and rinse you mouth out. Then lie down and rest the side that aches on a heating pad putting a little pressure on it. Oh and first and I'm sure you've already done this, take something for the pain. If you don't have a heating pad fill a 20 oz pop bottle a little over half full of the hottest tap water then squeeze the bottle down, put the lid on and wrap it in a dish towel. This will work like a charm.

See several good home remedies as well as "drug store fixes" mentioned above. If it's too late to go out, take a small piece of cotton and stuff it into the cavity. At least this will keep air and saliva from getting to the nerve. Actually, I agree with HM and I think putting a piece of cotton there would be better than biting on an aspirin. I've heard of putting a bit of whiskey or rum on the tiny piece of cotton before you put it in, but can't comment on whether this is a good or bad idea. It might burn worse if the nerve is actually exposed; at least for a while. It's up to you if you want to try it.

(This is a last-ditch suggestion, though, just in case you can't find any of the stuff mentioned above. Since you didn't say you were able to go get some aspirin, I'm guessing you can't go out at all or your drug store is closed.)

OUCH! poor thing! Yeah I have had my share of toothaches! Um don't put aspirin on your tooth, especially if the nerve is exposed, you can wrap a tea towel or cloth around an ice pack or bag of frozen peas and apply that on your face-cheek whatever side the bad tooth is on for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off, try taking migraine advil -the green liquid gel caps are awesome, and motrin is also good when I had a cavitity in my wisdom tooth it hurt real bad and that's what I got until I could in to have the tooth removed! Good luck!

The asprin story is an old wives tale. You can get more temporary filling material at Walmart or a grocery store or pharmacy, but that is a temporary fix. Just until you get to see a dentist. If you develope an infection, the temp filling might make the pain worse. See a dentist tomorrow if you can.

Putting a piece of 'clove in your mouth near it can relieve a little of the pain. It will get soft eventually and it will get hot but thats what 'numbs'the pain.Garlic, drops of vanilla, cotton ball with oil of cloves near the tooth or cotton ball with ammonia.BUT if the nerve is exposed you probably don't want to touch it with anything.Sorry. Better get to the dentist so that he can at least put a filling in.

How To Fix A Toothache

I've been desperate enough to gargle with wiskey. Gargle for 2-5 mins with the wiskey over the toothache. Nasty solution but takes the edge off. Stay near the sink though ... you'll want to spit it out when you're done.

Good Luck

Put a drop of clove oil on some cotton wool, put on tooth and bite down. If you don't have clove oil, go to the spice rack and get a whole clove, position over tooth and bite down on that...

Try oil of cloves, a good natural anesthetic. Or I suppose you could put some ground up cloves from the spice cabinet on it!
