I knew someone once who would just leave a stick of gum as a tip. Ouch!!!

When you go to a restaurant, do you leave the 15 - 20% gratuity? Or do you just leave?

definitely depends on the service for me.
If the service was adequate, 20 percent is not unheard of. Typically 12-15 percent in a casual setting.
If service is poor, 10 percent standard.
If service was lower than poor, I have been known to let the manager know on my way out that I did not tip, and this is why.
Let them deal with it.
However, most of the time, I tip around 15 - 20%.

Nik,

Tipping is an art.
I believe you should tip 20% and up,
unless there has been a really bad situation.
People who receive tips
are in the service business
and they work very hard,
and usually have low base salaries,
so, yes, I tip well.

Few things sadden me more, than
seeing bad or non-tippers. Talk
about being out of touch!

A stick of gum? Ouch is right!

I'm a very generous tipper. I'll even tip at drive-thru windows in fast food joints, b/c I know they're severely underpaid, and it's hard work. I guess I have a soft spot b/c I worked in restaurants for most of my teen years. My tip is usually above and beyond the mere 15%.

Generally, for excellent service, I tip between 25-40% depending on the cost of the meal. For mediocre service, I tip betwen 15-20%. For bad service, I might give 5-10% depending on how bad it was and if I thought there was a reason for it.

I used to wait tables... normal service always gets a 20% from me good service up to 50%. The worst I will leave is 10%... but I never hesitate to give someone a hard time if their service was atrocious.

I AM AN EXTREMELY GENEROUS TIPPER. I HAVE BEEN A BARTENDER/SERVER FOR OVER 12 YEARS SO I USUALLY LEAVE 30% ON A DINNER CHECK AND IF I AM HAVING DRINKS AT A BAR ITS MORE LIKE 50%. A GOOD TIPPER IS ALWAYS TAKEN CARE OF BY THE PERSON WAITING ON THEM

I generally tend to tip a bit above the 20%.... I look at it as having respect for a person and their line of work... how easy can it be for a server to be working their a$$ off and then get treated like crap by the customer? that would suck. I delivered pizza and most people wouldn't tip... like they take it for granted...

people should stop being so rude... AND they shouldn't make a mess - like a bunch of hogs (literally)..do they eat that way at home??
