Also check out car shows if there are any in your area(never been to a vw show where there wasn't atleast one car for sale) as check out the website of local clubs(can find some great deals through clubs). As well the clubs can prove alot of help with find a car, checking it out if you don't know what problems to look for, etc.

One question for you is this your first air-cooled vw? Try to find the most complete/original/solid car you can afford/find it'll save yourself alot of headaches down the road. As well don't jump on the first car you find. If your willing to wait for the right car to come up for sale you'll be alot better off then getting something cheap that needs a ton of work or isn't realy what you want. Good Luck
