Depends on what religion you're talking about. Christianity is not about control. It's all about freedom.

I think most Christians are practical enough to consider what happens during life.
Hitler was no Christian. A lot of people have weird ideas and if we were perfect we wouldn't need any part of any religion.
We can all choose whether or not to believe. If you have chosen not to believe based on the actions of a few people who are not representative of anything you can justify your beliefs or lack of them any way you wish.
I can believe the world is flat. That doesn't make it flat.
My beliefs are based on studies, a lifetime of experience and what I feel in my heart. It is a lot more love than hate.

Then locate a thank you to handle the 1st 2 products, eg consult with human beings, college show, a buddy, a specialist or trawl the internet. in this sort you will learn a) what somewhat is important and what isn't. b) the thank you to handle concerns greater effectively

From your mouth to *chuckle* god/desses ear!!
I prefer to think of myself as spiritual. I don't follow the christian path, but do still see some things that are to be respected within that relgion....in the purest sense. I also see things in other belief systems that I have adopted or studied.
I think we're so focused on what happens on the other side, that we completely disregard what is going on right in front of us.
Frankly, if there IS a hell, this is it, my friend...and we've all done a nice job of creating it.

Though I do not have the time to read beyond the first rhetorical question for a lousy two points, I agree wholeheartedly with your thesis statement at the beginning.
Wait a minute, I did have time to read your essay and I am in full agreement.
Marx believed that religion was the opiate of the masses.

When people quit thinking that they have to make everyone believe in what they believe. Faith & Religion had a guy, sorry, didn't get his name, who said: 'no one should say they believe without adding 'they do not know'. A dali lama said: 'I teach two things suffering and ending suffering.' Somehow we have to learn to stop causing pain. We could just stop. Our words are the only thing that causes us to be different from other spirits. Just stop. The buddist speak of their experiences, not beliefs. I won't speak of what I believe as I do not know. I will only speak of my experiences if... if you are interested to hear.

control is exactly it.
simply put, religion was pimped out to the masses as a way to control them. to instill fear into them. to give them a cause to rally around. it's for feeble minded people that can not think on their own.
Do I believe in God? Yes, most definitely. Do I go to church? Hell no. It would be very hypocritical of me to step foot into a church and pretend to care what they are going on about.
See, I have this affliction where I have learned over the years to not eat the big bite of crap sandwich people try to feed me, in this case religion, without first examining the facts.

All I want to see is everyone in th eworld to make it to heaven.... I love everyone... people get so wrapped up in religion.... it's so simple to see, but it is turned into this big thing with all the politics around it. God is LOVE , NOT Hate, Not Murder, Not Lies or deceipt.... we have so many different beliefs in this world, and everyone is battling over who is right and who is wrong...I believe my way, you believe yours and round and round we go.... And it isn't what God wants. None of us have a right to say what is right or wrong.... when our lives are over, we WILL know the truth.......and we are either going to make it to heaven or not...I hope and Pray the way I believe is the true way... I want to go to heaven... But I don't believe killing yourself and other innocent people is of God...... My God tells me to love everyone, and to Pray for those who are like that.... If we spent as much time praying for those people who bombed the twin towers instead of hating them, we may see change... even if it starts with one person. that is all it takes to spread the Glory of God.... let us Christians gather and pray for our enemies....Thats what God commands us to do.
