1 - Try a doing them on a big workout ball.
2 - the most effective way to do them make sure your focus on the ceiling not straight ahead then you're doing them, it works your muscles more.
3 - When you are on your back put your hands behind your head.
instead of just going up and down use your elbows and knees for this one. lift right elbow and left knee and meet them together as you do the crunch, next one do it straight in the middle, third one meet your left elbow and right knee. Then repeat. This will work the side of your abs too.

try doing pilates, there are some painful (at first) but effective ways to work your abs.
for example.. hold your legs up at a 45° angle and do your crunches or put your hands behind your head and alternate your legs at a 45° angle, when you come up (say you have your right leg up) touch your right knee with your left elbow and visa versa, this will work the harder to reach abdominal muscles on the sides.
another good abdominal workout involves only your legs.
lie flat on the ground and bring your legs up together at a 90° angle, then separate your legs and imagine there is a ball between your feet, rotate your legs half way arround the imaginary ball and bring them back, bring your knees into your chest, then bring your legs back to the ground. each time you do the imaginary ball remember to alternate which direction you rotate.
hope that helps :)
and remember, when you do your crunches to imagine there is a string inside you pulling your belly button into your spine.

The way to do crunches is to keep your arms crossed on your chest, lie on the floor, and squeeze your lower back down against the floor. It should be a very small motion, otherwise you are not targeting the abs. Everyone does them wrong because they lift their upper body up, and this works the legs more than the abs.

lay on the ground and put your hands behind your head put our legs in the air and cross them (not straight in the air) your legs are bent. When you crunch up try to touch your knees with your elbows.
Thats your basic crunch
