Peel the potatoes. Cut them into chunks, then cover them with cold water in a very large pot. Bring to a boil, then simmer until very tender all the way through. Drain the potatoes, then put them back into the pot over VERY low heat to evaporate any excess liquid. This will dry the potatoes.

While the potatoes are drying, heat milk just until hot, but not boiling. A good rule of thumb is to use about 2/3 cup milk for every 2 to 3 pounds of potatoes. You can use a mixture of cream and milk, if desired. Add butter or margarine to the hot, dry potatoes, keeping them over very low heat. Mash with a hand masher until the butter is melted and the potatoes are very smooth.

If you want to use an electric mixer:

With an electric mixer, beat the potatoes (with the pot still over low heat) as you add the hot milk, a little at a time, until the potatoes are the desired consistency. Scrape sides of the pot with a rubber spatula. Do not overbeat. Stop beating when they are creamy and fluffy.

Add salt and pepper to taste.

I use fresh potatoes, butter, milk, and seasonings. I peel and boil potatoes for about 1 1/2 hours, and then mash them up. Once you start mashing them, you can add the other ingredients, until it's to your liking!

Here is my very secret recipe for the best mashed potatoes in the world (seriously):

Peel potatoes and cut into large chunks. Pop them into a pot and pour in enough milk until the milk JUST covers potatoes. Simmer on about medium heat for a half hour or so, or until you've got a sort of gluggy consistency and the potatoes are nice and tender. Reduce heat to low, add a knob of butter, season with salt and freshly cracked pepper to taste, and mash with a masher to the consistency of your choice (I like mine to be a little lumpy). You can also stir in a handful of finely chopped chives. Yum.

As a variation, you can add some cloves of roasted garlic to the potato mixture before you start mashing.

Okay, I'm drooling now! Best of luck -- and mashed potato, however you make it, is one of the truly wonderous things in the whole wide world. Especially with green peas. :o) Yum yum yum!

they come in flakes in a box. mix the appropriate amount of milk, water, and butter, heat in microwave, then add flakes.

if you want to make real mashed potatoes, then boil up a whole bunch of potatoes (yukon gold kind i think makes good mashed potatoes), then peel off at least half the skin (some people like skin, some don't) and then, well, mash them. Add salt & pepper & butter. You can also add milk, buttermilk, or sour cream if you want them to taste creamier and/or tangier.

Step by step? Peel and cut potatoes. Boil potatoes til soft. Drain water. Add some butter and let it melt. Mash with potato masher. Add a little milk, some salt and pepper and stir. I usually get my mixer and whip my potatoes to make them smooth with no lumps!

just boil potatos, with holes in them, for about 1 hr or until you can poke a hole in it with a fork. then peel of the skin and start mashing. after you mash the potatoes, add some salt and pepper, with a little butter to melt. or if you want try some olives and add sour cream for a more spicier tang.

Boil the potatoes, mash them and put milk salt and butter. Do not put too much milk, if you put too much, potatoes would be too watery.

Is really easy to cook, Good luck

Peel the potatoes
Cut them into cubes
Throw them into a pot of boiling water
When they are soft, drain the water or take the potatoes out
Smash the potatoes with a fork or masher
Add milk and stir (until it is as smooth or lumpy as you like)
Add butter or any other things for taste (or ranch, salt, pepper, etc)

I think I remembered it all.
