Go to a shelter.
The dogs there have been temperment tested for cat safety. The attendants spend a lot of time with the dogs and can match you up with the perfect dog for your family.
Call ahead and ask if they have "family rooms". That's where you can meet and greet all potential playmates. Bring the dog and the teenagers. You can see and know without a doubt that the dogs will get along. (teenagers will need to be muzzled and on a leash-No, I'm kidding) Almost like your dog picking out his own buddy.
Shelter mutts make the best pets, they are inexpensive and come with a lot of "extras" for one low price. You are also saving a life.
Consider an adult. Sometimes they come obedience trained and housebreaking is usually MUCH easier than a puppy.
Good luck, I hope this helps.

"Small" and "Good guard dog" don't really go hand in hand. There are a lot of smaller dogs that will certainly make a good alarm system, but if you want something that is a deterrent to outsiders and actually capable of providing some level of protection to your family, you will need to find something bigger. Personally, my family, and my wife's family has found that female Great Danes are about perfect. They adore kids, they usually are ok with cats, and are devoted protectors without being overly aggressive. And though they are a big dog, they really are easier to deal with than most smaller dogs. They are extremely laid back and quiet, and for the most part lazy. They are continuously listed as one of the best apartment dogs for these reasons. And anyone who decides to tangle with one is bound to be sorry for it.

How about a pom? We have a cocker and a golden retriever and about 500 cats. He's great with all of them and barks when a stranger comes until told to stop. The big dogs rarely bark. Go figure. He does tricks and can be fiesty and fun, or gets cuddly and lovable. We used to have an indoor cat and they would chase each other around. So funny!

I used to have a shetland sheepdog looked just like a little lassie and they only reach like 15-20 pounds. He was very protective and loyal. Sometimes he chased my cats due to his strong herding instincts he got along with my other dog great but did not get along well with "other" dogs. if you are looking for a small protective dog this is a good breed.
Good luck

How about a chihuahua? They get along well with cats very well, and they will definitely alert you when someone approaches the house! I personally like the long-haired variety.

Chihuahua's are little dogs that act like the biggest, baddest dog in town. They can't do much except let you know when something's not normal-like someone lurking around your house or yard.

Sounds like a chihuahua would fit into your family just right. Very good watchdog, they will alert you to anyone on your prperty before you even know someone is around.
