My dogs are only outside as long as they want, then they are on my couch or on my bed. I don't see anything wrong with dogs being outside though, as long as they get alot of attention from you in the mean time. But dogs do love furniture...

One things for sure, when you have an outside dog, even if you visit it four times a day, etc. you will never be as close to it if it was an inside dog.

When i had a lab that was kept outside i loved him and always spent time with him, however now some 15 years after he died, i remember the last 2 years when i kept him inside because of his health, were the best 2 years i had with him and remember the most.

My current dog is an inside dog, and over the last 2 years, can honestly say that I am more attached my new dog, and am closer to it than any other dog i have had, manly due to it being an inside dog.

To get a full experience i would say if you have the choice, set up something for when your away that the dog can be outside with shelter of course, but when your home it is either outside with you, or inside with you.

I used to keep my dogs outside and regret that I did that now. They get very lonely for you. You should know that your dog thinks the sun and moon revolve around you. They depend on you for everything in their world. As some other dog owners have stated, dogs are pack animals. That means that they do not like to be separated from the ones that own them.
The dog I have today is a Lab. She is indoors when I am gone. I let her out to go to the bathroom and on nice days when I am home. She comes in when she wants, goes out when she wants and is in during the night. She is healthy and happy and I would never keep her out all day and night.

And from a different stand point that no one has mentioned yet.
When your dog is outside all day and no one is home, it is possible that it may be barking it's head off and driving your neighbors crazy.
I have a friend who has a family next door to her that owns a big Saint Bernard. They put the dog outside when they go to work and she said the dog is so bored it stands facing the back door of its' owners house and barks non-stop until the owners return from work. This is not unusual for outside dogs to do this. I also had a neighbor that kept beagles outside, their howling and barking drove the rest of the neighborhood nuts.

Absolutely not ok. I feel that as a domesticated animal, dogs should be inside. I have seen so many things happen to outside dogs and even inside dogs when left alone for a moment or two. These days I wouldn't let my dog out of my site for a moment unless I lived in a country setting and didn't have to worry about neighbors or stupid kids walking by throwing things or dropping poison in my fence.

I think that it is mean to leave a dog outside all of the time. He is supposed to be the family pet right then he should be part of the family and be able to live in the house with the family. I am a dog lover and i don't believe that any kind of dog should be left outside all the time. If you want an outside pet buy a deer!

No
i have a doggie door and my 2 dashounds can come and go all the time as we have the yard all fenced. My dogs are so spoiled [ its our fault ] since i retired from my work that if I have a drs apptment i hire my daughter inlaw to dog sit if I cannot take them with me with weather permitting like too hot; Too long of a wait; can`t get out of the van to go to the bathroom; They warn me when someone is coming up in the drive way. They let me know when it is time to go to bed; and when it`s time for their dinner and time for their evening treats. It all depends on why people leave their dogs out all the time and i guess it is their choice but my dogs are in when i am except to go to the bathroom outside. My petren i call them are like my kids { petren stands for the slogan All my children but they are all my petren. I even have a sign outside their doggie dog stating "all my petren welcome" I spoil my dogs and have often stated if i should come back in recarnation as a dog I would probably come back as a junkyard dog or a street dog and that would make me mad...I love my dogs so much and they are a part of my family. They put a smile on my face every morning throughout the day until i say good night to them...Yes they sleep with me..My older dashound is getting older and can`t jump up on the bed so we built her a ladder.

She's right in a way, but i think if you have a larger dog than it should sleep outside, but in a safer envoiment where it wouldn't be vounarably to alot of animals. Alot of times it better to let your pets come inside at night, or let them in for a while in the hottest point of the day, but really it's not inhumane. As long as they have clean food and water they'll be fine. But really who wants to come into someone's house that smells like a dog?? (and it's poop)

I don't like to see a dog living on a chain or running loose but we have a fenced in yard and a doghouse. In the winter our dogs spend most of the time indoors because it's cold around here but in good weather they seem to enjoy being in the yard and noticing everything that goes on in the neighborhood.

To me it all depends on the weather conditions. Although I have 3 inside dogs. It also depends on the breed of the dog. I'm sure you don't want Alaskan malamute or a saint Bernard perched up in the living room. Like you wouldn't want yorkies or carne terrier outside when its blizzard conditions. And besides why let people tell you how to handle your dogs. just make sure you don't neglect them and keep there shots updated.

It depends on if the have a fenced in yard or not.If you feed and water them regularly. And if you spend some time with them. If they are on chains, I think its wrong. I have seen more dogs ruined because of that. People just chaining them up to protect what little property the have. Most of those dogs end up biting the wrong people anyways.
