You are "of this world" if you practice materialism, fornication, being judgemental, etc. In order to not be of this world you have to follow His Law...God's Law....Put your mind and actions on higher levels of being.

Meru B,
Well, one good thing to realize is that is if you were of this world, you wouldn't believe what Jesus said.
A person of this world values the things of the world more than the things of God.
A person of the world will follow after the cares of this world.
Some of the answers that you got are just plain wrong. They are saying that you have to stop sinning, as if that was possible.
Being a Christian doesn't mean that you have stopped sinning, it means that you trust what God said over what the world thinks. The sin is in our nature, it will come and come again as long as we are alive in this world.
Being of the world is to take what a sin is and call it not a sin. Those that are not of this world are not to do that, mainly because it's wrong to think that you can escape sin.
There is nothing clearer in the Bible aside from God keeping His word, than the fact that we don't stop being sinners, we are just saved sinners. So those of the world wish to think that they don't sin, a Christian that preaches such a thing is being worldly in his thinking, just as bad as the world does.
Another thing that those of the world does is accept their sin as if it was something that doesn't matter. They begin to call themselves God and even Satan at times. They are the one's playing a fool.
There's a fine line recognizing the fact that; for example. I am a sinner, and someone who tries to expound on that truth and say that they are the devil. The distinction is that I am beiong humble and realistically so, while the other is being bragadocious about the idea that none of it matters anyway.
So the world is bragadocious, and prideful, and not fearing of God, while those that are not of this world are just passing through with the promises of God in their midst, and ahead of them.

We (Christians) live in the world but are not of this world. We don't follow what this world thinks is OK. i.e. sinning.
Instead we follow God's Word (Holy Bible). We (Christians) are set apart from everyone else.
It will be the same on the final judgement day. The sheep will move to the right of the Father and goats to the left...((Guess where there goats are going))? Yeah, not through the pearly gates.
Grace to you and God Bless!

The Bible says not to be loving this world or the things in this world because the world (things man-made) are passing away and so are the desires of the world (love of material things). In contrast, if you love God and your fellow man and are willing to sacrifice your time, energy and other assets to try to help others to learn about God, then you would be considered a spiritual person--not of THIS world.

When you act and think like everyone else. Not of this world simply means you are of the spirit. You are not a slave to the matter world of its materials. Your heart is pure LOVE. You have awareness that everything is connected to God. There really is no seperation. The matter world is an illusion/delusion of the spirit world. Look beyond...Look deep into your soul.
Take care and God bless.

it means do not conform to the world because then you are not loving God but loving material things.... i think you can tell if you are attached to something and are not willing to give it up to be a better person ... that's why a lot of people celebrate lent to confirm that no worldly thing is in front of God

To be in the world but not of it, is to live physically as you do but to live by the principles of God's word. Those who are "of" the world live by the world's philosophies, goals, ambitions with a rejection of God's Son for their salvation and a pattern of personal salvation by doing what's good for them, as much as they can for as long as they can. They may do something kind but it is just for altruism's sake, it is not because of their love for God or God's love that dwells within them. Those that are of the world, deny the truth and the truth is not in them, they walk in darkness, blind to the reality of God's love.

The world system is the religious system.....the church has taught that it is the evilness of the world, when in fact, it is them......They are of the same spirit as the religious leaders of Christ's day.
