based on year 2000 records, the dog breeds most likely to bite in the united states are:

Pit Bulls
Rottweilers
German shepherds
Huskies
Alaskan malamutes
Doberman pinschers
Chows
Great Danes
St. Bernards
Akitas

you have to keep in mind, however, that this list is based on eye-witness accounts and many people cannot differentiate breeds which look similar (hence the pit-bull being number one)

This is just common sense.
As some dog lovers have written all dogs can bite, but come on folks.
Those dogs bred specifically to guard have a tendency to bite quicker. That's what they were bred for. Not as lap dogs.
Get yourself to a library and look through the big dog books that list all the breeds and their temperaments.

The books very clearly list dogs that are calmer and those that are more aggressive and need owners that have strong personality's to control those types of dogs. Rottweilers. Chows, Doberman, Pit bulls, Dalmations and yes even Cockers are known to be more testy around people and are not laid back dogs in certain situations.
And there are other breeds as well, that are biters.

You may not believe this, but you can do the research! A few years ago, the Cocker Spaniel bit more people in the USA than ANY other dog! My Rottweiler never tried to bite ANYBODY! The bigger the dog and the better the owner, the less likely ANY dog will bite. So, it doesn't matter what the breed is. Ignore all the idiots who come up with breeds who bite. They are all ignorant of dogs and just guessing.

I agree with Em. A little poodle has just as much chance of biting someone as a pit bull does. You just don't hear about that because a small dog can't do as much damage as a pit bull or a rottweiler. When a powerful dog bites someone It gets more attention. But they have no more tendency to be vicious than a small dog. It's all the owners and how the dog is raised.

you know oddly enough, I cannot find anything that shows this however years ago I saw a list and out of the top ten at least 8 were small dogs with the cocker and chihuahua at the top. Pits were actually at the bottom and only because of the severity of the bites they inflict not the frequency they occure. Sad fact. the media does not help either because the moment someone thinks it is a Pit or it looks like one whammo, it is the headline story for that night. sad fact that so many people believe the media now a days.

Normally bred and raised pit bulls are actually one of the least likely breeds to bite. Don't swallow everything the media feeds you.

I was watching a show on the top 10 most vicious dogs. The Akita made the list, and the Chow Chow, and of course there were the pitt bull variasions. Can't think of more. Don't trust Akitas and Chow's at all.

Pit Bulls, Rotweilers, Chauwawas (I know that i spelled that wrong sorry. Doberman Pinschers, Chinese Shar-Peis, Poodles, Huskies, Chow Chows, German Shepards, St. Bernhards. The best family pet to get would be a Labador Retriever, not only are they smart but are a lot of fun they catch onto tricks easily and love a lot of affection. I myself have a Llasha Apso, and they make good pets too.

Pittbulls are known to bite if they are raised wrong, chows are bad about biting, i was bit by a chow mix and my gram was bit by a chow. Akitas are good if you raise them right. Then there is little dogs yes the yappy things have the worst teeth for biting, they are the ones to look out for, they are snobby little dog.

VISIT WWW.ATTS.ORG THESE PEOPLE TEST EVERY BREED EVEN ONES I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF. THEY DO A TESTING PROCEDURE THAT WILL SHOW THE MOST AGRESSIVE AND THE LEAST...
SURPRISINGLY TO MOST PEOPLE PIT BULLS ARE NOT ON THE TOP OF THE LIST FOR AGRESSIVE ANIMALS!!!
HERE ARE A FEW EXAMPLES OF THE PASSING PERCENTAGE OF THE ANIMALS TESTED IN ONE GROUP...
CARIN TERRIER(TODO) 70.5
BEAGAL 79.7
AUSSIE SHEPHARD 80.7
BULL MASTIFF 75.9
(THIS IS ONE OF THE BREEDS THAT IS USUALLY BLAMED FOR PIT BULL BITES, IE ITS NOT A PIT BULL!!!)
CHOW 69.3
COLLIE 79.0
DOGO ARGENTINO 90.0
(LOOKS LIKE A PITBULL)
GREAT DANE 78.9
GOLDEN RETREIVER 87.9
AMERICAN PIT BULL 83,5
AM STAFF 83.3

THERE ARE WAY TOO MANY TO LIST SO PLEASE CHECK THIS SITE OUT. PIT BULLS ALWAYS SEEM TO BE THE FIRST WORD OUT OF PEOPLES MOUTHS WHEN WE TALK ABOUT AGRESSIVE DOGS. THIS IS NOT THE CASE IT IS A STEROTYPE. THIS IS A FORM OF CLASSISM AND RACIAL PROFILING BROUGHT ON BY THE MEDIA. IN NY THERE WAS A BIG BITE STORY ON TV THIS PAST YEAR. THE ANIMAL WAS BLAMED AS A PIT BULL WHEN IN FACT IT WAS A MASTIFF BREED(OF WHICH ARENT VERY AGRESSIVE NORMALLY, BUT THEY ARE BECOMMING THE NEW FORM OF FIGHTING DOG. PEOPLE WILL BREED MASTIFF WITH PIT BULL TO CREATE A BIGGER FIGHTER).
JUST TAKE A LOOK AND SEE WHERE YOUR DOG RANKS!
