Is it too soon to start explaining to them about sex, how the body works, pregnancy, things of that nature?
I just don't want them to be naive to what goes on around them at such a young age.

My boys have shown concern, they've even discovered themselves if you know what I mean.

I think when your children start asking questions it is time to answer them. Be honest also. Your children already have some ideas, which is why they are asking you questions. I had 4 daughters,so I started talking when they were around 8 yrs old. You would be surprised what your children learn from other children, not all of it accurate either. I also have a 15 yr old grandson and although his father talked to him,I gave him a womans point of view. We talked to him when he was around 10 yrs. old. We still talk about things of a sexual nature because he is growing up and he still needs advice. The sooner you talk to your children, the easier it is to continue to talk to them, especially if you are honest from the beginning. Makes me feel good that my grandson wants my opinion.

My sons are 10 (almost 11) and 3 (almost 4) - My 10 year old and I have already had a talk. WE didn't do it all at once, he basically just started asking quesitons and I answered them honestly. Then I caught him playing under the covers alot and had to explain more - he now shuts his door. I think you are at the right age to start talking. My son always comes to me when he has a question.

just my non-parental opinion (i'm male) that most childhood questions could be understood if the parent(s) took the time to remember their own childhood and what they needed, wanted, could have used, were deprived of, etc. as little kids them self.
i remember having a very deep and intense interest in sexy stuff at about 8 and discovered masturbation at about 11. we did not have a close connection with mom and dad and absolutely no sex education other than from other kids (the street), films, comics, and assorted very bad sources until years and many mistakes later. you'd have thought our parents had never engaged in sex or had the slightest notion about it (my dad was a cheat as i later learned).
just remember your own childhood and the answers to all those kid questions will be obvious to you.

I already knew all about sex when I was 10. I'd say now is a good time to start telling them before they find out from their friends and/or movies.

I think the best age to be telling kids about THAT topic is when they're 13 or 14, since it IS the age where they officially become labeled as "teenagers."

Im not at that stage yet of motherhood...though I do think you should now monitor them more then ever for hints that they may be already showing interest about talking about that topic. Good luck.

If they are asking questions...answer them honestly. But until they ask, there is no need to mention it at this time
