Good question about the numbers.

And, it's NOT better to stay away from credit cards. Get them, pay them off in full every month, and develop a strong credit history. Your FICO needs positive payment history.

I just saw a news segment that said the avg per person is 7K, but I've also heard it stated higher. It is better to stay away from credit cards.

it depends on where the "average person" comes from.
I hear that British people have the most debts in Europe and Italians have the least.
Americans might be like the British so there you go: plenty.

MSN reported this week it was $13,000 just to years ago and now the average american owes $17,000 in non secured debt.
