I think what they do to dreadlocks is burn the ends so it will stick together. I myself use medical adhesives/tapes, the one they use to tape a gauze to your skin in hospital. They don't easily fall off even when it gets wet.

Depends on the method they use to put them in I have tied them in with a thin string. I have knotted them in, and even put a small amount of glue on them to keep them in place.
