I think the quote is a vast over-simplification if not outright wrong.
There are lots of religious people who live with misery and hate.
There are lots of atheists who lead quite happy lives (as long
as they don't broadcast that they are atheists, as true-believers
can start becoming really hard to live with when they see a happy
atheist).
Perhaps, true believers think the atheists OUGHT to be
unhappy and are therefore "projecting".

I am a believer and I'm sorry to say I'm not always positive and happy because I am only human. I do have the Lord to give me comfort and strength during the bad times.
I never thought this before, but after reading the answers on Yahoo, I've notice that the Atheist do seem very miserable and hateful.

*sigh* I'm not an atheist nor religious.....i just don't know and i am not willing to take or pick a side...."seeing is believing". But here's the thing....I'm a happy positive person and am not religious.....I'm not miserable or hateful because i don't have a belief system.
So the answer is no to both......only you can decide what makes you happy and sad and believing in a fable or believing in nothing at all makes you happy then go for it. Who's to tell you how YOU should feel.

I'm happy and I don't believe in the bible or Jesus, yes I believe in a Creator but I don't believe It is human.
There sure are a lot of stone throwers out there. But then the Christians or religious people are used to throwing stones aren't they. You know the saying, if you can't stand the heat then get out of the kitchen. Personally I don't believe in Hell either and everyone who knows me can say that I am NOT miserable or hateful, if fact I'm a very nice person and I try, I said try, not to judge people about anything, even their driving habits. And that is hard to do each day in a big city.

I can't speak for everyone...I will only speak for me.
I am a Christian. I am positive and I am happy.
Happiness is a decision, not a circumstance.
I don't look for outside stimulus to make me happy, once that stimuli has "worn" off...I would be back to unhappy.
I can understand why someone would write that. We as Christian have a hope that non-Christians or non-believers don't have. We have a hope in the future (and know where we are going when we die.)
I'd rather live my life walking in Jesus' footstep; die and find out there isn't a God...than to live my life like there's no God, die and find out I'm wrong.
I love people...I forgive people (doesn't mean I trust everyone) or that I would put myself in a position to need to "forgive" them again for doing the same thing again. We all do a piece of stupid now and then...we are human, we make mistakes. Ask for forgiveness, give forgiveness...and now we can move forward!
Grace to you and God Bless!

Religious people are only positive and happy in public. Atheists are just more realistic about life and not interested in putting up a front to impress others.

Misery and happiness are two sides of the same coin. It really does not make a difference whether a person is atheist or religious. The statement is a black and white generalization.

I will answer like this in Heb 11:24 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter;
Heb 11:25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;
Moses knew that all the happines on this side of life were not worth what heaven has to offer were happy here because we know what waiting for us in Heaven
