1. Stop caring if people hear you. Your personal affairs should be none of anybody's business.
2. Don't just go and ask for her number up-front, out of the blue, cause you'll scare her. Make a little conversation, just enough for her to see that you have brains and that you're not a freak, to get to know her a little and give her a chance to know a little about you. Make sure you listen not just talk.
3. I know it takes longer but that's the right way to go. Then, you can ask if the two of you could meet some time and talk some more and then ask for her number.

The trick: don't be discrete.
I don't entirely understand why it is, but confidence is an important part of attracting women. Being direct actually works a lot better than being discrete.
So, you might say something like this: "What's your number? Mind if i give you a call sometime?" in a straight, clearly spoken manner. Ask her as though you were asking a family member if you could borrow their car; relaxed, familiar, and clear.
And even then, she may not be interested. Women are like that; sometimes they just don't feel it. Don't get discouraged if that happens; it's no reflection on you as a person or as a male. You only have to worry if it happens a hundred times in a row - in that case, you're probably doing something wrong.

Act normal. Maybe become closer to her and become friends, if you aren't already. It would be awkward to ask a girl out when she dosen't know you that well. Just be casual ask her out to go the mall, the movies etc. Don't be shy. That is a major turn- off for girls.

Write your phone number on the upper part of a paper and break it into two halves. Then one is a blank sheet.
Hand these two pieces to her. She must recognize what she should do.

The best way is just to go up to her and ask. It's not always easy but be direct or you're giving weak signals that she will not like.
