A few months ago, my Media Player was working fine. Now it wont play any of my files, no matter if from the Internet or CD. It says "Error downloading codac file" or something like that. I can connect to the internet just fine, but why isn't my media player playing any of my saved files? I tried to install a different version of Media Player, but my computer is so messed up, it won't let me download anything. Help?

"Codec" stands for "COding-DECoding". There are different video and audio codec's out there, and without the correct codec, you would not be able to play your files properly.

May I assume that your "files" are video files? If that's the case, you have probably deleted some of the codecs that are necessary for playing the files. When I have a missing codec, what I usually do is run a nifty little program called GSpot Codec Information Appliance. It will display the necessary codecs to play your file (both the video stream and the audio stream) and whether you have those codecs installed.

Once you know what codecs are missing from your computer, you may then search for the codecs again from the web and install them.

Hope this helps. =)

Open Windows Media Player, go to Tools, then Options. Select player tab in options menu. In blue writing it says automatic updates, download codecs automatically. Look further down the page, it says connect to internet .( override other commands.) Go to file types tab in options, on bottom click select all. Click apply and ok. Make sure to do this for each tab. It should fix problem.

if your getting that error message it means you don't have the right codec to play the video/audio file your trying to play...

the latest version of media player is fine if you can restore that player, what you need to do is download the right codec for the file your trying to play... most times what your need is the divx codec which can be found at divx.com (or google it if not) if that dosent help I recommend trying the windows xp codec pack, ive had a lot of success with it in the past...

(both googable downloads and free)

hope it helps, cheers

first off, go to your control panel, add/remove programs and uninstall you W.M.P., next, click start, go to your program list and click on accessories, then system tools, disk cleaner and run that to free up space on your hard drive, then run the defragmenter, it is in the same place as the disk cleaner,(in case you didn't know), then go on the internet and do windows update, then re-download and install the Windows Media Player 10 if you are running XP, or 9 if you are running anything else. Good Luck, and feel free to e-mail me if you have any problems.
