the space in between a female cat's anus and vagina is much shorter (anus and vagina closer together) than a male cat's anus and penis (which you won't be able to see). All kittens look like they just have 2 "openings" back there, and basically they do, and the only way to tell a male from a female is the amount of space inbetween those "openings."

A male kitten will have two little round 'things' near his bum, while a female will not. If you don't see 'them' you can ask your vet. We have a cat who we thought was a girl, but the vet told us it was a boy. He was under developed (which may explain his soprano toned meow).

If you look you will see a scrotum on a male cat although you won't be able to see a penis. If you gently feel (seems an odd thing to do) then then testicles should be there if it's a male but they are very small.

a male cat's testicles take a while to "drop" after they're first born. my cat had an undescended testicle and had to be operated on. You should be able to tell by the time they are weaned.
