yes, you can go to black being red, but please make sure it will go with your skin tone first. i dyed my hair black once, and it was horrible. i looked like i was dead. some people can pull it off, but some cant. anyhow, i think the best dye is l'oreal color expert, but if you dont want any kind of highlights, l'oreal preference.

I dyed my hair red, and once you dye your hair red, there really is no going back. If you dye your hair a blonde color, the red will show through, and if you dye your hair a darker color like brown, it will look more mahongany because red is a strong color. The saying, "One yoiu go black you neve rgo back." isn't true, because you can bleach your hair from black(which I recently did).
If you no longer want to have red hair, I suggest you get a 40volume bleach kit from a local store and bleach your hair to a platinum blonde. Once your hair is platinum blonde, you can dye it any color and it will show up radiant and beautiful.
Bleach will get rid of the color completely(if let sit long enough - 45-50 minutes) and then the next color you dye over it, will show up without red, or a red hue.
Dying your hair black will eliminate the red(I tried) but black is a color that fades. After a few weeks your "radiant black" will fade to a deep shade of brown, but beause it was previously red, it will again be a reddish brown. Red is one of the hardest colors to dye over. If what you're looking for is a shade of brown, use a scalp-safe 30, or 40 volume bleach and toner to bleach your hair. I bleach my hair every other month or so, and it isn't as strong as most people make it seem.

If you want to go drastic, try the Herbal Essences black - it almost has a tint of blue. But before you screech on your brakes, let me tell you that it is NOT punky looking or crazy. It has a different shimmer to it under the light, which gives it a unique touch aside from people who have naturally black hair. It rocks and is an easy way to NOT bleach your hair. Dying your hair black can even help decrease hair damage.
Have fun! ^_^

If you MUST go black, a good tip for it is NOT to use black dye. On the very possible chance you hate the way it looks, it would be impossible to wash out. Instead, use a dark, permanent brown. It comes out black for a few weeks, then slowly fades to a natural brown.

Black is such an extreme color. I really does not look good unless you are black yourself. How about going for a dark brown unless you are african american and it goes with your complexion and since you have previous die issues have a professional do it, so it does not fall out. If they say no do not go there because it is better to have hair than no hair.

If you dye it black, you can not go back!
You can bleach red out - but it takes a lot of bleach and will damage your hair.
