And why Naples , anyway ? I thought Venice is supposed to be more beautiful ....

Actually it was 'See Naples and die'. That was a reference to that the city is so beautiful, there is nothing to top it and therefore no reason to go on living. You've seen it all.
The world traveler Humboldt in the19th Century made the statement that, Salzburg, Naples and Constantinopel (now Istanbul) were the most beautiful cities in the world. He saw a lot, but of course it was one man's opinion and perspective.

Well, you never know. Napoli is supposed to be a very beautiful city and I'm pretty sure that's the origin of the saying. And beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Just visit as much as you can and make your own opinion which place is more to your taste.
