i recently went with a school group to salinas, california and work with migrant farmers in the fields as well as with their kids, see where they live, have fun with the kids at a camp, and just experience what their lives are like. we saw the medical problems they have, the barrack like shelters they have, and just all the other things that could easily be fixed if someone just cared a little. it was one of the most rewarding times in my life.

Working at the old folks home that the state appointed emplyees didn't want to tackle even with pay. I was about 15 board to death but had to get out the house and volunteered for almost one full year and was offered a job by one the patron's son and 11 years I still work for that company SBC/known as ATT now. Not too many people could say that in this day and time especially for my age group. Hard work pay's off in the long run you better believe me I'm a witness.

The Best for me is when i Saw my charges growing up from being Boys and Turning into Men, brilliant, dedicated, disciplined successful young Men.
These Boys are from a variety of Backgrounds , rich spoilt brats, average families, orphaned, abused and some abandoned Boys.
it will be forever rewarding for you when you see how they work together under your guidance.
How they merge together and work as an unit,
How they put aside their differences in no matter what they do,
How they put what they have learned to help the needy,
How they grow up and rise up in the ranks to lead their juniors,
How they strive to excel individually but never forgetting about their weaker comrades.
How they become Men and give back to the community with what they have learned because they Want to.

I volunteered in a battered womans shelter once when I was 16. It was rewarding in many ways. I learned a lot about myself from those women, and it felt good to take care of helpless children too. It was the first time I ever remember truly feeling "human".

I say a nursing home, I worked as a CNA /CMT in one for almost 10 years the most rewarding job EVER!!! It feeds your soul working in healthcare really puts your whole life into perspective, yea I had to (wipe butts) as some refer to it, but someone has to.It's not what you would do as a volunteer but, you can learn so much being in that environment. The only downside is you find yourself attatched to these people and they are their to die but you are there to make there last days pleasant,,a very spiritual journey indeed!!

I volunteered a week in a hearing impaired classroom, ages 5-6. The kids were the cutest things. Trying to get them all situated for work time was hilarious, you had to have eye contact for them to "hear" you of course, and if they didn't want to "hear" you, they closed their eyes! Now....... how do you converse with them?

Helping out at the local Senior Center this past Christmas. We gave them all presents, put on a skit, sang Christmas Carols with them and fed them. To see the look in their eyes and the smile on their faces was wonderful.
