I'm puttng together a website on Urban Paganism, and while I have my own experiences and those of my friends to draw upon, I would like to hear more from other folks living the religions in an urban setting. Whether you are Wiccan and/or Eclectic, practice Asatru or Voudon, yearn for the country or channel Rat and the City Parents, I would like to hear your experiences.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

We live in a large city and either it's not that noisy or I've gotten used to it. I yearn to actually see the stars at night and see the moon without looking past rooftops. I wish our yard was big enough to have a large veggie and herb garden but I appreciate the wildlife that we have (birds, rabbits, an occasional turtle or toad). We have plenty of parks and beautiful rivers here in the city and they are wonderful.

By living in a city, I get to be anonymous. Folks seem to be more accepting of others who are a bit different than them, but then again maybe they just don't care as much. There is definitely much more diversity in our local pagan community. We have folks who travel all different paths. Our community networking is great---we have 7 local yahoo groups (one has over 350 members!), witches and pagan meetups, spiral scouts, kids arts and crafts nights, dances, PNO's, parties....oh, there's just always something going on!

Even living within the city limits has it's privacy. While we can't have bonfires here, we can easily do our rituals outdoors without worrying about it. We simply live our lives and it happens to be in a city.

I am Asatru, started out Wiccan about 10 years ago, was Eclectic Pagan for a bit, and then became Asatru about 2 years ago. I have always lived in small cities. It has it's ups and downs.

Downside: Not as much access to nature, and the few spots you can find are often noisy with noise from the road, and sometimes they are crowded with people who want to try to experience a bit of nature too (can you blame them?). Plus it can be hard to meditate at times when you have constant distracting noise coming into your home.

Upside: More people live in cities, and out of those people you tend to have a better chance of finding other Pagan-inclined types if you want to network. And it's a bit challenging which sometimes can only serve to help you spiritually, like learning to ignore distractions during meditation and ritual, which is a valuable skill to have. Plus you appreciate more fully those times when you can get away to be among more natural surroundings. They have more meaning.

So, pluses and minuses all around. I don't have any real specific incidents that I can think of at the moment.
