I use frontline plus for dogs and frontline plus for cats seems to help quite a bit. There are 3 applications per package and you use one monthly. It ranges in price for about $35 ...but, it's 3 months worth of medication. I then spray the furniture/carpets with a Flea spray. It's a headache, no matter what you try. Good Luck.

I feel for you! I was left with fleas from the old owners of our house, I found them on the cats. The vet said that if you see one flea, you have a million living in your house. Treat the animals with front line or revolution, not a flea collar as they are only effective for about 3 hours....then begin to CLEAN! treat your house like you had head lice. wash linens in hot water and things you cannot put into a dryer, seal up in a garbage bag and let it sit for a while. The vet also told me to buy this flea spray from them (in was about $15 a can) and I found basically the same stuff at Walmart for $4 a can. It is call Pretect. It does not kill the fleas right away, it makes it so their off spring cannot have babies, and it lasts for 280 days, since flea eggs can stay alive for up to a year. That stuff is amazing, and they claim it is pet and human safe after it is dried. Also, when you vacuum, make sure you change the bag and take it outside or dump the canister outside, they can climb out of the vacuum. Hope this helps......

Frontline.

I wouldn't try the dawn idea, since it might irritate the dog's skin.

I found that when you use Frontline long enough, you can go without it for months at a time. My dog is almost 8 yrs old, has been using if for most her life, and I haven't used it in about 6 months. And although we live in a caribbean island where fleas and ticks are everywhere, no feas or ticks here!

Frontline Plus will kill adult fleas for 6 weeks and ticks for 4 weeks.

Advantage will kill fleas for 4 weeks. Will do nothing for ticks

Advantix will kill adult fleas, ticks, and supposedly mosquitos for 4 weeks. DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT ON CATS.

Any kind of shampoo will kill adult fleas if left on long enough (5+ minutes)

Flea shampoos/dips are worthless as it only kills the active adult fleas that are on them and is irritating to dog's/cat's skin.

Do not use any product you can pick up in the grocery store or pet store. These products are low quality and do not work as well. Also, many of these brands (Hartz/BioSpot) are notorious for causing bad reactions in cats.
Pick up your flea preventative in your veterinary office.

I CURED our FLEA AND TICK PROBLEM .... I crammed my sisters cat into a microwave for 30 seconds..guaranteed to get rid of the fleas and ticks.I used the "defrost" setting and take collar off or you will hurt the microwave. The cat acts a little funny now and runs like rocket when it hears the microwave run and sometimes it just takes off running for no reason.
