colonoscopy is a diagnostic image method used in gastroenterology, based on the direct viewing of the colonic tract mucosa, by using a fiberopctic endoscope inserted via the anal sphincter into the rectum and following de descending colon and so fore, i think this study can reach optimally the transverse colon also, but not further. It is indicated in cases of unknown diarrea, fresh blood in the feces, and in patients with familiar history of colon cancer, for example. The examiner can see inside thnaks to a camera with a light atached to the tip, it has also an air pump that blows air into the colon to open and spread the tract, allowing de device to advance. The examiner can also take biopsy samples with a tiny biopsy clamp that can reach the interior through a thin canal that runs al along the wall of the device and has an end hole next to the camera eye, so the examiner can see the lesion and take a sample at the same time . All the modern endoscopes are flexible and the tip can be moved and bend to the sides using control commands operated by the examiner. The final images obtanied can be visualized directly via an ocular or ataching the device to a monitor, nowadays color images can be obtained. Usually this procedure is done under sedation and it doesn´t take more than 30 minutes.

You can get a colonoscopy for many reasons. They use it to examine the lining of the colon. I know it can be used to look for cancer in the colon. (That's how my father's was diagnosed.) But I think it's used for other things as well, like Crohn's Disease and Celiac Disease. Mine was done because I'd been having a lot of abdominal pain and irregular bowel movements. I also have a family history of some colon problems.
You spend the day or two before cleansing the colon by only ingesting liquids and then at the end there is usually something you take (either a pill or a powder you mix into a liquid) to help finish cleaning it out. Believe me, that's the worst part of getting one! The test itself is a piece of cake because you are under anesthetic. You don't really even know it's been done. You will have to have someone to drive you home since you will still be wonky from the anethestic. There are no after effects.

First off you have to avoid some foods/medications for a couple of days before the test. Next you have to stop wating any solids on the day before. Then the night before you take strong laxatives and suffer until you are hollow. The next day you get checked in, changed put on a trolly and drugged through an IV line in the arm/hand. The drugs reduce pain and give you amnesia about what goes on during the procedure. What you remember varies from person to person. The facts show it is a mildly to moderately painful procedure but even though the patient often suffers at the time (up to'it was the worst pain of my life') the amnesia means most say it was easy and that they slept through it. My consultant told me that he bets that most of the 'it was a breeze' people actually cursed and groaned during the exam. So it is not pleasant, and it hurts at the time for the majority, few remember anything much and it can save your life.

basically they run a camera up inside your colon to check for polyps or other growths or to see if you have colitis etc. you are not unconscious for this procedure because they have to move you around but they give you 2 medications. one is a pain killer and they other one makes sure that you dont remember anything they do to you. i have had 2 and dont remember anything. both of mine were clear but they could find someting that could be the cause of any bowel problems that you are having. the problems are too numerous to speculate on but your doctor might have an idea wha s/he is looking for prior to going in.
