The British forces succeeded in landing at Dieppe, but were defeated by the German counteroffensive. However, the Dieppe operation was only a test for the following D-Day.

In September 1943 the German forces tried to land at Cefalonia, a Greek island defended by the Italian Division "Acqui". The landing was a failure, but the Italian garrison was forced to surrender by massive aerial bombings.

It could be the battle of Midway, the Japanese were trying to capture it.
There was also Sea Lion, the invasion of Britain that never happened,
and Dieppe, which was a raid.
