Within a few minutes of the birth of your child, a doctor or nurse uses the materials the company sent you to collect the cord blood. The company has a courier take the blood to their labs immediately, where they process it to remove the stem cells from the sample. It is then frozen and stored. The cells can later be used for your child or matching family members for certain diseases. It costs quite a bit, usually around $1500-$2000 for the initial processing and up to $250 per year for storage.

The cost varies according to the company used. The company you use will send you a kit and it contains everything you need in it. After the baby is born and the cord is cut the Dr or Nurse takes the cord and draws blood from the blood vessels in the cord. They like to have about 50cc. Its then refrigerated and the company is called and they send someone over to pick it up and depends where the company is located they ship it for a fast delivery. The cord blood is frozen and can be used in case the baby has cancer or other health problems. The collection has to be done in a sterile environment. Cord blood contains stem cells. Some people with children with cancer have had second babies so that the cord blood could be used to cure the first one. If you are interested go to yahoo search and type in cord blood collection.
