I know that too much protein is bad and too little is bad as well. Also any other info on Dane nutrition would be great!

I do like the WELLNESS brand - it's got veggies, fruits, essential vitamins & minerals and it's easy on the dogs. It's a bit pricey, but in the long run a healthy, high-quality diet will save you from a lot of vet bills.
Great Danes are delicate dogs, in spite of their size. You'll want to feed puppy formula until about 6-7 months, then gradually switch (over the course of a week or so)to the adult formula of the same brand. Puppy formula is meant for skeletal growth, the adult food will then slow that down so the muscles, ligaments, and connective tissue can 'catch up'.
BLOAT is a major health issue once large breed dogs reach their full size. The first site listed below is for links to sites about Great Danes...scroll down to the Bloat reference and read it FIRST.
Just my additional 2 cents here: Great Danes are smart and people-bonded. Get into a puppy class, then take a reward-based obedience class while your baby is young. You want to build your bonds early and also have voice control over your dog before it out-weighs you!

I have a 6 month old Great Dane puppy named Titan!!!! We fed pedigree (the only thing my Rotti would eat...passed 6/29/06)...Protein is bad for GDs...Titan developed an allergy to something...ended up with a full body staff infection from the scratching...been on antibiotics for a month and a half now!....we ended up with Nutro Natural Choice-Chicken, Rice and Oatmeal adult dog food...Biljack (BillJack?) is a great dog food (adult select)...puppy food, even for large breeds is way to much protein for these big guys(watch out for corn...Titan is allergic to it). Pedigree is a good cheap dog food. If that is all you can afford, that is the best...if you paid a lot for your puppy like I did, you will buy the best of the best for the newest member of your family. Would you eat nothing but greasy food? Why feed that to your dog?
Here is a list of high end dog food:
Science Diet (has corn)
Nutro Natural Choice (chicken, rice and oatmeal does not have corn)
Biljack (has corn)
DO NOT FEED PUPPY FOOD...check the protein level...no more than 22% (first line)
These are the ones we looked into for our Big Boy!

Great Danes and other GIANT breed dogs should be fed a puppy food formulated especially for large breed animals. These formulas have specific mineral balances to help a big dog's bones grow correctly.
Remember cheap dog food is made from cheap ingredients.

When my dog was a puppy I use to cook the beef for him, and never gave dog food in cans, that's why my dog is so healthy, then in a matter of 10 weeks I started to buy some dog food but now he is 1 year old, just remember a puppy has to be treated like a child.

Do not feed any puppy food to your dane. Not even the ones for large breed dogs. No kibble-N-bits,pedigree and Iams either.
Wellness is good, along with pinnacle,precise, some even suggest eukanuba. I myself feed Eagle Pack to my dane.
Then there is always B.A.R.F (bones and raw food)

I would recommend Eukanuba Large breed formula It has Glucossamine which will help his joints as well as lots of extra nutrients large bones need to develop quickly. I also love Nutro line of pet foods they have a new Ultra line that has Salmon, Chicken and everything you need to have a very healthy dane.

I strongly urge you to feed your GD puppy IAMS Puppy food and make sure you get the one for 'large breed dogs'. It is available at Wal-Mart for about $15.00 per 20lb. bag.
In short order you will see a shiny coat, an exuberant, alert, clear eyed puppy and he/she will not overeat. The long term body and tooth health is unequaled. An added plus is the reduced stool production. This you will notice almost immediately. IAMS uses no fill in their products. I have used this product since 1981 and have raised the healthiest dogs on earth.

ucanuba im sure the spellings wrong but its the best but ask your vet they can point you in the right direction for your breed of puppy , you can get great coupons from the net for dog food , i saved a total of 158.00 this year on dog food coupons, i have a rottie and they tend to be hungry all the time , enjoy your new baby

Purina one for large breeds is good also royal caine specially design for great Dane breeds ( get at large pet store ) they are a little expensive but will worth it
