You obviously do not know what atheism means.

That's called "strong atheism". And you're correct; it's completely irrational.
However, there is also "weak atheism", wherein the atheist has no beliefs in any gods. It's not that a "weak atheist" believes god does not and can not exist; it's that a "weak atheist" simply has no beliefs regarding a god or gods.
The majority of atheists are "weak atheists". They regard the belief in god the same way you regard belief in the boogey man. That might sound like an exageration, but it's not - to an atheist, the concept of a god is so absurd that it's not even worth considering seriously, much less taking some sort of official position on.
A lot of religious believers have a hard time understanding this, or believing that it's true, because for them, "god" is something very real and concrete in their lives. For someone to so cavalierly dismiss the very existence of god as being silly and irrelevent is therefore rather surprising.
But, being an atheist, i can assure you that it's absolutely true.
Oh, and as for your other comments: atheists require evidence in order to believe in something. But you don't need to "see" something in order to gain evidence of it. Similarly, it is reasonable to trust trained professionals to do their jobs, especially when experience tells you that their advice is sound and accurate.
It's not a matter of "faith"; it's a matter of "reasonable assumptions". For an atheist who actually thinks the matter through a lot, there's no such thing as being "certain" about a fact. Everything you know is, at some level or another, an assumption. So, rather than worrying about "absolute" confirmation, it's more reasonable to just draw conclusions using the information you have to work with, and be willing to change your conclusion should you get new information.

Hi Annie -
When a person gets an x-ray or a blood test, the results are tangible. You can see the tumor or the cancer cells. No x-ray or blood test can confirm or deny the existence of a god or any other spiritual entity. If you feel a presence within yourself, and if that presence makes you happy, then I'm happy for you.
But please don't be so arrogant or presumptuous to assume that I am unreliable because I don't feel what you feel. Using your logic, if a person feels the need to attend church or talk to someone from the clergy, is that person also unreliable because they don't have all the answers and seek expert counsel?

This question seems to be appearing a lot lately; to use a stock standard answer: I am not an athiest but i do see where they are coming from. Where is YOUR proof that god does exist? You can point to the trees and to other things that appear on this planet, but they can be explained scientifically, the forming of the universe can also be explained scientifically. i think that if people want to cling to a religion thats great, but you shouldn't try and make people believe what you believe. What your saying should almost be reported as abuse. Can YOU treat yourself for cancer? Can YOU tell which blood group you are WITHOUT going to a doctor? I have full knowledge of who I am, what I like, what i don't like; I have discovered this from living (outside of a religion). i am guessing that you don't know much either and you have not fully understood the bible and its teachings (this is a fault of most religious extremeists). I thought that bible said that you should except your fellow man? turn the other cheek? If you are so pure as you are suggesting you are, why are YOU turning away from the bible and teachings? If anything you are contradicting them.

You make a number of grievous presumptions, shedding extremely poor light on your argument.
For one, you assume that the term 'athiests' includes a group of people with identical beliefs. I am agnostic and leaning towards athiesm, which means 'ungodly' and is not the same as 'antitheism' which would mean against gods. I belief in plenty of the supernatural, just not that YOUR 'god' is the creator of the world and myself. Perhaps he is a being or creature that has power, but I have read the bible and CLEAR contradictions show that 'god' is evidentally interpreted differently by the different authors of the bible, let alone, interpreted differently by the many millions who have read it since it's advent.
So it seems your 'back up' is unreliable, as a matter of fact, just as much as ours. As a matter of fact, I personally believe in, more or less, everything (although Santa, Easter Bunny, and Tooth Fairies need not apply), but that no one thing prevades everything else. Except perhaps some scientific laws that have not been discovered yet. I do believe in that kind of *rationale* though, logically based, rather than faith based.
Ok, another grievous presumption you have made makes very little sense to me. Yes, we must get x-rays, blood tests, pap smears and the like to 'see how we work' and to 'know ourself' as you put it. And so do you, for you are no different. EVERYONE seeks knowledge of ourselves elsewhere, biologically and in other ways, that is part of the human condition. You do as well. You speak as if you have never been to the doctor, because you admonish us for doing so. That is one of most irrational and ignorant perspectives of this age. I assume you live a life of solitude on your doctorless island where you get all you need from God, and your local computer store, since I see you are using one. If you have ever read a bible, or spoken to a priest, you are 'guilty' of one of the things you admonish others for. Going elsewhere for knowledge of yourself. The difference is, we get accurate knowlegdge, and your priest guesses why you have chest pains and pins and needles in your arm. Hope he guesses right.
In the meantime you are guilty of hypocrisy and arrogance, but I do not judge you. For I do not know you. All I can base my words on is your words. That is all I have ever done on this site, to religious people asking questions of 'athiests'. I thought it was polite, and godly even, to reciprocate courtesy.

Everything you have written can be turned around about god..
Perhaps your life would be alittle better if you stopped concerning yourself with other peoples business and lived your own life!
You say how do we know he doesnt exist.. How do you know he does? Great world we live in aye.. Now why would god wipe out the world back in the day with the flood but sit up there now watching us kill each other, torture each other etc.. The world today is alot worse then it was then, Why has god done nothing about it?
Here is a hyperthetical question..
If 2 people are about to have a fight and they both pray to god to keep them safe etc.. and one of the fighters dies.. Why did god allow that nice family man to die? why did he take that mans life and not the other one? How did he determine who's life it was right to take?
Your god is a crock.. you need every ounce of your brain to imagine him up.. You are in here screaming all this crap down our throats because you are scared that you are wrong, its better if everyone believes the same as you that way no one will question it aye...
The nice little head space you live in is great for now.. however reality is a greater.. one day you will realise that.. hopefully its before you die!

Was there supposed to be a point in that somewhere? Does Jesus report to you nightly about your medical conditions, that would be cool. Unfortunately, you have to rely on science for that. Unless you are crazy. (from reading your post/rant I can only assume that you are) I am a Christian, but I am also a realist. You need science and logic in your life as well as a belief system. Believe it or not, Atheists have a belief system (science, etc.) just like you and I, just there is no Deity involved. Live your own life, stop harping on other people. Its judgmental, and doesn't that contradict your philosophy?

You saw Jesus, that means you are in heaven already, no longer a mortal creature.
Do you know what is really inside you? Do you know what makes up the quark that makes up the protons and neutrons? I bet you don't know, then how can you be sure that you know God if you don't know yourself.
What I see is there is contradiction in religion, did it said the y2k is the end of the world and did religious people change that date again? I still heard lots of sexual harrassments cases involving the priests, who should be true to their hearts. And did you ever see Jesus rises after he die? No, because you weren't born yet, so how can you be sure he really rises? There is no recoding of his rise, so it can all be made up to fool you. And you easily fall for that lie.

I'm an athiest and I don't say there is a realm I can't see. I can only see light at a wavelength between roughtly 300-900 nm. My rperception is confined to my limited senses.
I do say there isn't a supernatural personified God.
So you are saying you saw god in an xray?

Ergo, every delusion of man is the truth, interesting concept. People used to think the earth rested on a giant turtle, or maybe not. Look up the word "faith" it says it all. Yes, you can believe anything you wish, four year old children believe in the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus. IT DOESN'T MAKE THEM REAL. Or is this concept beyond you?

Wow! You mean that Christians never have to get x-rays, blood tests, etc., but they just know all the information without it? That's really amazing!!!
But--have you had ME x-rayed and seen he is inside me or anyone else for that matter?
Didn't think so.
