Everyone has to decide what they are comfortable using. I personally didn't have any luck with the shampoos they sell anywhere and after doing research I found out that they can have some really bad side effects on some people. I have tried everything. The best thing I found was the "Robicomb" or something like that. I know it sounds weird. But it is a comb that is electric that you run through their hair and it literally electrocutes the lice. You still need to go through and pick out the nits and it takes a little longer. Just do it a couple times a day for a few weeks and I promise it will work. They sell them at wal- mart for between 20 and 30 dollars. but it is so worth it in the long run. I've had mine for a few years and still use it from time to time to check to see if they have it when there is an "outbreak" at their school.

Don't take chances with home remedies.. if they end up not working, you are only making your problem bigger. Buy a treatment at the store. Also, buy the spray stuff that kills lice. Spray your car floor and seats, your carpet, your matresses, your furniture, anything that cannot be put in the washer. Then put all stuffed animals in a trash bag and tie it, and let them sit there for about a week just to be safe. Wash everthing that can be washed in the hottest water you can. If you miss even one step, someone will become reinfected.

All these home remedies will kill the bug.. but the lice shampoo also kills the nits because it is a chemical.. then you can go thru and comb the nits out easily. If you don't kill the nits you will be doing this again in a few days.

Despite what you may think, lice is a clean persons disease.. they will only attach to clean hair.. spray your kids hair with hairspray, or put gel in every day before they go to school

It is best to get Rid, or a store bought system. Mayonnaise does work, but you still have to comb out the nits. You have to leave it on the hair for 2-3 hours. It is really stinky, but I hear it works. You need full fat mayonnaise and a plastic shower cap. After waiting wash hair with shampoo, or diswashing soap. There is also a new product called LiceKiller. It works witout the strong pestacides. I know how frustrating it is. I am a teacher, and the kids come in with it every year. You need to get rid of the lice in the house as well. You need to bag up stuffed animals and pillows for the day. You need to wash all linens. Vacuum and dust as well.

anything left on for 8 hours will kill lice. Conditioner will not smell as bad as mayo. Cover the hair in conditioner (or babyoil, works even better) and put a showercap on the hair. Let sit for eight hours (bedtime is usually a good time for this. When the 8 hours is over take a lice comb and brush through the hair. Wash like you normally would.

The chemical can work, but it is salt based and many times burns the child's scalp. That, and we had an ongoing problem until the school found the child spreading (not everyone who has lice itches) that treating your kid constantly destroys their hair.

good luck, any questions feel free to IM

my head itches just talking about it ;-)

I've heard of vinagar being used. But I would use that lice shampoo if was you. Also its important that you comb out all the nits with a little wee comb... This is gonna take a long long time. Make sure you wash all bedding and clothing the child had contact with. Put the dryer on a hot setting and let it go for longer than usual. Vaccuum your couches and bed mattresses. Make sure other parents have done the same for their kids otherwise it will just keep getting passed back around. Hope this helps.

I am a retired teacher - and believe me - I have had my fill of lice. I agree with those that say to use the commercial products - once you have done all the cleaning and combing, there is one little trick that we would tell student's parents to help keep the lice away - use a TAR based shampoo, any dandruff shampoo will do - but if you can find plain old tar soap, that works the best. It comes in bar form, so you will have to work up a lather with your hands and then apply to the hair. You might find it in health stores - or Frontier Herbs may carry it.

Good luck

titzen ash 23 had some great pointers, just a few that were missed....
if your child uses coat rack/hooks at school
pack a garbage bag in your child's back back (after spraying it) and have then take it to school. Make sure the child understands that their backpack and coat has to go in the bag as soon as they get to school and doesn't come out until it's time to go home. Those little lice bugs crawl from home coat hook to the next. If the child rides the bus, DON'T let them until the school has started spraying it everyday.
Don't forget your vehicles, get the bug spray and spray everything, vaccum it first... same with in the house. Throw away all hair ties and what not unless you can wash them.
Take your child outside in the direct sunlight and pick through the hair getting all the nits out. Make sure you check behind the ears, the very back of the head, lower part in the middle....
and if you have a boy... just shave his head and treat the house/stuff....
boys have it so much easier then girls.

When I had daycare kids with it (they gave it to my girls) we went and tried RID but that didn't work. The only thing that did work and worked well was Lice FREEE. That stuff was good. I think the only the the mayo will do is grease up the hair so it's easier to get the eggs and nits off. It doesn't kill the lice though. Good luck!!

no, they don't. fantastically those issues.... lice stay off the oils contained in the hair, mayo, and peanut butter are oily, they are going to feed the insects. do not study listerine. i recognize that Lysol would artwork, or the former college turpentine which i could under no circumstances recommend.. truly of creating use of RID, use Pronto. that's more effective acceptable. Get honestly a approach of metal combs that pull out the nits... yet another ingredient that facilitates shrink outbreaks could be to bathe their hair daily. which will wash out the lice in case you also use the comb, in the previous they have a danger to position their eggs that is the actual difficulty. i'm so sorry you're having this problem so early.

i know this is gonna sound really odd. but when we got lice the doctor told us to use the nix stuff. and then use dog shampoo for a month or so afterwards. it keeps them away. but only use the shampoo like every other day. we cleaned the house with the bengel roach spray. that works really good too. once you clean everyhting and get the eggs out of their hair. now once we used peanut butter. but another time we i used gasoline in my hair, it helped to get the eggs out easier. but if you get lice alot then you take all the stuffed animals and put them in the dryer or a trash bag and tie it up really tight for 2 weeks. then anything on it will be dead. but the dog shampoo with perithemin( how ever you spell it) works really good. mi hope you have some good luck. there was 6 of us kids, and we got it so much that we had no stuffed animals in our room, and the plastic on the bed and pillow, for the longest time.
