You should get legal help. You may have to be creative and persistent, but you can get the help you need.

I am assuming that because you live in Louisiana that your fiance's wife had to file suit there. Here are links to sources of free and low cost legal assistance in Louisiana.

In California:

Other good sources of information regarding low cost and free legal assistance are local law libraries. Most major cities have one.

Law schools are another excellent source of information. Some law schools run clinics that allow law students to handle cases that fit the right profile. You often get excellent representation that way because law students are motivated, they're closely supervised by experienced professors and have excellent resources to find the information they need.

Probably her sexual orientation won't matter to a judge in a custody hearing. If you can offer the child the better home...then fight for everything its worth. Children are our most precious possessions. If she is a good mom, other than her being gay, then make sure your fiance supports her and the child: emotionally, physically, parentally, and finanically.
There is legal aid. But it takes proving abandonment, abuse or neglect to take a child away from a mother. So make sure your fiance keeps a watchful, loving eye on the parenting situation.

There are tons of attorneys out there that offer free consultations. Use it! I don't believe that her sexual orientation is going to matter much to the court, but her health issues and the fact that she took off with the child could be grounds for custody. Each state is different. Contact an attorney in your county and get with them and find out what can be done. Most attorneys will accept a retainer fee and then you can make payments after that. Good luck!

just because she is a lesbian you shouldn't be holding that against her and he should send child support since it is child. His kid does have to eat, have clothes on his back and have a roof over his head.
