Last night we played tennis, and my dog (11 month old female shepherd-hound mix) chased the ball for about 45 minutes on the tennis court. Today, she's kinda dragging her back legs, one of them a little more than the other. Can't tell if she rubbed her pad down or her toenail or actually may have pulled a muscle, but is there any kind of pain reliever to give her? She's not acting hurt, but if it's inflamed, is it okay to give her part of an advil or something? Please help! I'm really upset about it.

We played at like 11:00 pm last night, that's why I didn't take her to the vet last night. And I noticed the limping today when I came home from work. I have two rescue dogs and a rescue rat, and believe it or not, I'm not one of the idiots on here who's trying to get advice on how to neuter my own dog or crop its ears or something. I'm trying to find a way to lower the inflammation until I can get her to the vet tomorrow. Thank you for you people who gave me REAL answers, and weren't just looking for 2 points.

And she usually runs on the beach with us and our other dog every day, this is just the first time we took her to the tennis court. That's why I think it's pads or toenails being worn down.

if you do not want to rush to the vet you can give her a buffered asprine --if you want to spend a pretty penny you could take her to the vet where they probably would give you a exam and prescibe her remadyle (not sure on spelling) it is a anti-inflamatory vets give dogs for swelling and pain...good luck :) if she dosen't seem to be in to much pain she will be fine...it is like a kid that played a little to hard

NO ADVIL! You ca give a dog aspirin but never any other pain reliever OTC. Being a shepherd mix this may be a sign of hip dysplasia. This is a congenital condition where the hips do not properly fit into their sockets and can cause lameness and pain. Extended activity can bring it on more. The only real way to know if this is the case or not is through x-rays. Your vet may be ale to feel if the hip joints are looser than they should be. She have just overworked herself and is a bit sore today. Let her rest as much as she wants and call your vet in the morning. In the event it is hip dysplasia don't fret too much depending on the severity. There are many new treatments and drug therapies out that really aid in making the animal more comfortable and living a relatively pain free yet slightly less active. Good luck and hope she feels better

The only thing my vet ever told me I could give my Sheltie was baby aspirin. So that is what I would do for the night, then tomorrow morning call the vet and explain what is going on and let them decide if she needs to be seen.
It could be a number of things, pulled muscle, sore pads or toenails ripped. The Hip Dysplasia acting up since she is part Shephard mix.
Also one thing I am very familiar with because of my former Sheltie having it, is Luxating Patella. It is the muscle that runs across the knee cap. It can slip out on some dogs after much activity, and they will limp. Or not walk on the leg. It can pop back in on its own. And if it should be that, you need x-rays taken to see the extent of it. And possible orthopedic surgery like my Sheltie had done.
Hope this helped a bit. Good luck.

The best thing to do would be to take her to the vet. The vet will prescribe an anti inflamitory that is safe for dogs. I read on here that someone said to give the dog ibuprophen. Ibuprophen should never be given to a dog for any reason. Someone else said Baby aspirin. Well...baby spirin is ok but will only help the pain.....which could cause the dog to injure itself further. It won't help the inflamation. I would suggest taking him/her to the vet. Possible the dog over extended while playing and pulled something.

Oh poor thing I hope she feels better soon. I would recommend giving her pretty much and over the counter medicine me or you would take for pain. The vet gave my dog Tylenol before for pain and said they can actually take one dose larger than humans. If she doesnt get exercise as often then I would take her out more but for less time until she gets use to the routine and then take her out longer. Also keep an eye out for her leg too cause it could be early signs of arthritis. I had a german shepard growing up who ended up with it in both back legs, said it was common in shepards.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER give a dog ibuprofen (Tylenol, Panadol, Advil, etc.) You might want to give her 1 aspirin, no matter the weight. But you should not abuse! Dogs do not metabolize aspirin as humans do, and you might damage the liver. Less is more!
I recommend you call one of the 24 hr. emergeny vet clinics, which could provide you with more information as to what to give her, plus other suggestions to make her comfortable. If you are really concerned about giving her medicine, you could try a cold bath, gently massaging her sore legs until you can get to the vet.
Hope this helps!

The best thing to do is call your vet. The only medication I was told to ever give a dog is baby aspirin. Advil or ibiprophen (sp) are toxic to dogs. Please do not give that to your dog. You might want to check on animal hospitals in your area that are open 24/7 and keep that number handy for future use. Hope she is feeling better.

You cant give them regular asprin but baby asprin, over fifty pounds you can give her two BABY asprins. that is what the vet told us. we used to give our dog that for arthritis. I could not tell you what the problem is. i would suggest giving her the baby asprin and then taking her to the vet just to make sure. if she has not exercised in a while and especially on the court cement then it may just hurt from that, i know after walking on the cement with bare feet it hurts the next day really bad. well, thats about all the advice i have for tonight, God bless. Do not EVER give your dog anything over the counter with out first consulting your vet. Give them a call, if they think it needs to be seen then take it into your vet for an exam

My vet said the only thing to give to your dog is baby aspirin. Try the liquid kind because it tastes better. If she/he isn't used to strenuous activity then he may be tired.
