My grandson was 4 when most of his teeth were pulled, his brother was 5, their aged 3 brother has only 1 cavity at the moment. When the 4 yr. old had surgery, the dentist said that it was a combination of genes and the fact that their Mom had bad teeth and probably passed it on to her boys from the usual things Moms everywhere do for their kids. Esp. kissing. If she had known not to feed from her plate, shared glasses, etc., they and she would have been spared so much pain. I also had bad teeth. Also, medications during pregnancy can play a part. So, when people get nosy and ask why, refer them to their dentist. My daughter never gave up the kisses.

I personally believe that bad teeth are genetic. My nieces have really bad teeth like their mom. They always go to the dentist and try to do their best, but I think it's genetic, just like eye sight or just about anything else. I know how you feel though, both of my parents have bad teeth and I'm surffering the reprocussions of it. Of course they never took me to the dentist even though they preached to all the time that i should take care of my teeth. They didn't have the money or any insurance to take me. Just keep going to the dentist and brush you teeth a lot is all I can say. Look for toothpastes that don't contain sugar. I've actually heard some do! If you don't like the way you dentist takes care of things, try someone else. Good luck!

I feed my eight month old table foods when her daddy isn't looking (he's soooo by-the-book) If she doesn't want her baby food I give her her cup instead. Sometimes I only offer her solid once a day. She has been off the bottle and paci since 7 months. I really get criticized for that!! I sweep but don't mop the floor every day that she is crawling on. I put her in my bed when she wakes up in the night. I don't always change her diaper when she wakes in the night. I fed her some of my snowball at the park the other day. (we're not telling dad about that one either) I have let her taste ice cream. (or that) I even gave her a sip of my decaf tea the other day even though she's never even had juice. I lie to her doctor about where she sleeps and tell him she is on a perfect schedule. OMG, this was really fun! It really makes me feel better to see all these answers and realize I don't have to be a perfect mom for my kid to turn out ok. Thanks!!

I was told by dentist that more than likely if your parents had bad teeth you will too. Everytime I go in I have something else. My daughter has had five teeth pulled and the rest filled all by the age of 7. I guess this is just one more thing we can blame our parents for.

it is possibly genetic but your surrounding factors are also influences - for example most Japanese people (im not saying ALL) have bad teeth because it is expensive ..so they don't bother fixing their teeth - and it passes down to their next generation,,having bad teeth.
But anyways it is all up to you - you gotta take care of your own teeth.. and prevent the worse. I myself have to do that too cuz i just had a root canal and if i don't take care of that tooth it'll rot n i'll be forced to make fake teeth!!
We just gotta brush our teeth everytime after eating (especially eating sweet stuff) ..

Yes, I do think that "bad teeth" are genetic because my mother's family all have permanent teeth missing and so does my mother so I have one permenent tooth missing in which I will have to get an implant and my brother has four permenent teeth missing and he has braces to fill in the spaces.

I think it's a combination of genetics and the way you care for your teeth. A study has been done that relates tooth decay to heart disease, which has been proven to also be genetic.
