my 14 month old boy keeps pulling his diapers off...is it too early to start potty training or is he just irritated with the diapers?

He is just trying to show some independence. My 19 month old daughter seems to think she is potty trained. She goes into the bathroom, gets a diaper, sits on the potty (especially if one of her sisters has just been in there) and says potty potty potty. But when i take her diaper off and set her on there she doesn't go in the potty. She wants the new clean diaper instead.

Is your son showing signs for example is he holding his pee through the night? Does he hide and knowing that he is going pee or poop in his diaper or does he mention anything about going potty? I would have him pick out a potty and show him the boys underwear and tell him if goes potty in the chair you will come back and buy these for him. He might show interest or not. You can surely try and see what happens but you don't want to force him and make it a bad experience or your going to have a hard time when he gets older because he will remember that incident. My other thought is about him taking his diaper off maybe he has a rash or something that making him take of the diaper. Or he likes to hear the rip from the Velcro on his diapers. It can be numerous things. Good luck. I just went through potty training two months ago. It was successful.

Hi:

Well, if your little one is pulling off his diaper now try to put him on the potty and see what happens. He may have to stay there for a while so give him some toys to play with, or move the potty where ever he likes to be for a long period of time. Then when something comes out, make a big deal about it and he will be more than likely to do it again because he would like to get the same reaction from you again. It worked for me when my little one was pulling off her diaper many years ago.

It's never too early to try.. I was completely potty trained before I was 2, with no accidents anymore, just because I wanted to do what my brother was doing. If you try and he doesn't like it, then he's not ready.

I found, with my friends son, he would go, only if he wasn't in a diaper. If we put him in a diaper, he would take it off and pee in a corner, but if we let him run around without a diaper, he would go on the potty

Could be either or both...although 14 months is very young. Once they discover how the diaper comes off, it becomes a fun game and could totally not be potty related. My daughter did the same thing, but she didn't know the actual sensation of peeing so she couldn't use the potty. Sometimes they show signs but they have to show a certain amount of signs before they are totally ready.

I have 4 children. My daughter was over 3 when she started training. My three boys were all potty trained by 2. It looks like your son may be signaling to you it may be time to start potty training. Try it, and if it doesn't work out, just go back to square one. The main thing is to keep smiling and not to worry. Each child is different.

That is fairly early for potty training, but it has been done. He is likely finding out what he can do by himself, and taking his diaper off is a big thing. Does he go to childcare? Many times they imitate the older kids in class..some train quicker that way.

Time to start potty training. Re-enforce asking if he has to go potty. It does take some time when they get the "hang" of it as you can't tell when they have to go until they show the taletell signs....(holding area, crossing legs).
Children do start to show their independance when they start to "play" like that. The diaper that is. Have some patience and for the first few weeks. If your child shows lack of interest though in going potty.....back off some.....our pediatrician says you can't force them.

i wish taking their own diaper off was a sign it was time to start potty training - I'd have my 10 mo old potty trained in a heart beat - I've actually given it a shot but he just wants to play... think I'll wait a lil while longer.. :-P

It is never too early to train. I know someone who's child was allergic to her own urine and she trained before she was one. I seen a show on t.v. and parents were putting their babies on a potty as early as 4 months. They would run water and the baby would pee. I thought it was amazing. my baby is 4 months old, but I think I will wait a little while. Go for it. you will save a good bit of money!
