I think the scientific view is that we evolved from scratch and somewhere along the way picked up a sense of self. I agree that is kind of un-romantic and doesn't leave much room for the idea of a soul, life after death or a great purpose yet to be revealed to us.
But to me it makes sense and gives us a greater purpose than anything else could.
It is up to us to solve the strife that comes from hopelessness, anger, religion and mis-placed desire.
It is up to us to ensure we as a species survive. That we don't commit mass suicide by internal fighting or polluting ourselves to death.
It is up to us to develop methods to combat disease, asteroid strikes and eventually the extinguishing of our sun and all that it supports.
I think we are alone in the wilderness and there is no search party coming for us. But that isn't desperate and tragic, it is invigorating and liberating.
From your question I believe you may have a religious reason for asking so I should say that I believe all religions have good roots but somehow get distorted as they are handed down.

Sorry cant look that far back in time... But Ill take my chances with evolution rather then believe that a miracilous person all of a sudden appeared and created the earth in 7 days and 7 nights and created man from dirt and woman from the rib of that man and oh gosh what has the world come to that society would honestly believe that!

Here is an answer to all the people who ask who created God. The name of God according to the Bible is "I AM". This statement says it all. God is, was, and will be. God has no start, God has no end. This is scientifically possible. Extreme gravity deforms time. So it is actually possible that God could exist in one of these timeless places. The implications of this are immense. God does not have to have a beginning if God exists in a place where time does not exist. "I Am".

Lets say for fun, someone made us...
Who made the maker?
And then who made the maker that made the maker?
And who made the maker who made the maker that made the maker?
Humans are just like any other mammal who happen to be primates whose descendants were African apes. But rather than evolving a long neck, big eye, huge lungs, we happen to have sprouted a big old brain so that we can come up with Yahoo! questions.
Ain't nothing wrong with that.

If you think God made us then why there is difference between man to man, One is rich other is poor, One is having good health the other is born blind. some lives for 80 years and the other dies in his child hood. who controls all this?
How did the first human start? This leads us to think who made God?
This is endless discussion. Simply enjoy your present and inner self.

Darwin - evolution... any of this ringing a bell? Science and the emrging field of genetics have established beyond doubt and any question that we are a product of single celled lifeforms evolving over time and adapting to an environment where only the fit/ lucky survive. In fact it is now thought that we could merely be vessels that propogate our genes.
GOD=An all powerful being who lets millions of children die of hunger is a perverse JOKE... comparable only to a peadophiles evil.

Good point...
According to Atheism some chemicals got together and formed the first self-replicator which by random chance and mutation became the first living cell which by random chance and mutation became a multi-cellular organism which by random chance and mutation became a invertebrate which by random chance and mutation became a vertebrate which by random chance and mutation became a ape which by random chance and mutation became a human.
Unfortunately I am no longer able to believe in the story above.
--
There is no evidence that proves Atheistic MacroEvolution (without Intelligent Design)...
I used to believe in Evolution. However, over a period of time I have grown skeptical of the claims of Macro*Evolution... this is largely due to the weakness of the evidence for Macro*Evolution, and the fact that the evidence, rationally interpreted does not support the overarching claims made by Macro*Evolutionists...
For scientific and intellectual critiques of evolution, see http://www.godsci.org/gsi/apol/evo/00.html .
Is Evolution a FACT? Not really -- not in the macro*evolutionary sense. See http://www.godsci.org/gsi/apol/evo/evofaq2.html for relevant discussion.
---
I find that the vast majority of people who believe in evolution, do so by faith and authority
(faith -- because atheistic macro*evolution is a faith; and authority -- because they believe in the word of "experts" in the field, rather than truly understanding the evidence themselves).
Cordially,
John

I like Jeffrey K's answer/question who made god? I believe in the evolution theory...it makes more sense than that all of us started off from a man made out of mud and a woman made from his rib.

well, if we are on stupid questions, where did god come from?
If god could always exist, surely matter could
The person directly beneath me is exactly right, just because it isn't known doesn't make it divine.
And John, that's a very good point, but I'd rather believe in random chance and mutation then in divine magic.
