Tipping stands for "to insure prompt service" but people now expect it as a normal part of service. Many jobs like food servers are based on minimum wage with the expectation that the tips will increase the person's income.

I tip 15% for standard service and 20% for excellent. But if the person treats me like dirt or provides terrible service, I do not tip.

For me, it's quick service. I don't mean when ordering...I do like to take some time to read the menu. I'm talking about when I order a refill of my drink. If they notice right away that I'm out, and come take my glass, then bring it back within a minute, I think that deserves a good tip. Also, getting my check to me quickly. I hate sitting for 5 minutes waiting for the check, and having them come by several times with the dessert tray to ask if I want a dessert. NO...I told you the first two times, I don't want dessert...I want my check!

There are many levels of service I have experienced. Of the upper echelon, great service consists of a well-informed, well-spoken server who is genuinely concerned with my satisfaction. Excellent service takes it up a notch to the server who is able to ANTICIPATE the needs of everyone at my table for the rest of our dining experience after we place our order. For example, if someone in my party is allergic to dairy foods and makes that known from the start, the waiter who remembers and suggests a dairy-free dessert without prompt gets a BIG FAT TIP!!!!

Actually, if the food is awful, but the waiter/waitress is Obviously trying to fix the problem, or is upbeat, or even quiet but quick, I'll tip extra, because I know that they are actually "paid" about $2.30 an hour, and their Tips are actually used by their boss to make up the difference between their base pay, and the minimum wage...

Someone who is pleasant and provides good service. I would only not tip as well if the service provider if they messed up my order over and over again. If it's not cooked right, I realize it's the chef and not the person who brought me the meal. I'm not sure if all people realize what a hard and difficult (at times) a position they have. You must have a really good memory, tolerant and very energetic.

Good food and good service, however, even if the food is bad it's not the server's fault. If they are efficient and courteous I always leave a nice tip, usually at least 20% of the bill, no matter what the food was like.

I will tip more if the server is polite and attentive and makes a genuine effort to provide me with a good dining experience. Servers who don't smile, forget to check in, and don't bother to refill water glasses will never get a better than average tip from me, even if the food is outstanding.

When they refill my beverages before i ask and make sure everything is fine every time they are in the vicinity... and if they show a little T&A

quite a few other countries, like germany have tip/tax included in the price... and in some asian countries its actually rude to tip.

Being that I have waited my fair share of tables in my life, I probably leave a little more than most.
But I am more critical also.
I like to see a server with a real smile on their face, that talks to you, not down to you.
You even get points for not stinking! Either bo or perfume/cologne.
Keep my glass full with out being obnoxious. Try not to ask questions when I have a mouthful.
Just be nice, even if you are having a bad day!

The quality and quantity of the food, great service from the waiters or waitresses, and I know some people would say that you don't go to a restaurant for atmosphere, but the atmosphere as well.
