We can leave no earlier than 2pm. How long of a trip should we anticipate and are there any alternate routes to bypass traffic?

Ah, keyword is "we". The diamond lane (2 or more in the car) will speed up your commute bigtime.

How long will it take? Without rush hour, or accidents, it would take you 4-5 hours, depending on how fast you drive (and what part of San Diego County you're driving from).

Alternate routes? I would stay on I-405 (rather than 101) going thru L.A. But there really aren't any alternate routes -- don't waste your money on the CA-73 toll road as you approach Long Beach. Not if you're traveling with someone. The diamond lane will be sufficient.

Santa Barbara might have congestion, but you have no choice but to drive straight through.

So how bad is it? It will be challenging because of the hour you're leaving. If you don't have to arrive in Morro Bay until late, say, 11 p.m., then I'd leave San Diego at 6 p.m. Again -- assuming you're with a passenger, the diamond lane through the I-5 / I-805 merge will be a God-send.

Drive carefully.

2pm will put you at LA at 4 which is horrible -Being a south OC girl that lives in monterey county - and can assure you traffic will be a bear. My advice - take a nap and leave san diego about 6:30 7 pm - then by the time you get to OC then LA things will be getting better. GOOD LUCk the drive is actually not that bad - I use the 101 not a lot of alternates - if you find any let me know. So get to LA and have a nice dinner then go on or just wait and drive in the evening - you should be able to make it by midnight if you leave at 7. From SD it is probalby 5 hours. If you leave at 2 it will be fine a bit of slowing near the airport in OC. Then by 4 you will be at south LA and it will be stopped it will take you until 7 :30pm (yes 3 1/2 hours) to get through LA and through Ventura at that point. You will be lucky to arrive at Morrow bay by 10:30

From about Irvine to somewhere north of downtown Los Angeles, the traffic is going to suck like a big giant Hoover vacuum cleaner. I would bet on your trip through this area to take you somewhere around 2-3 hours. I say "this area" because I live here. I don't take the freeways in the afternoon, which saves me about 45 minutes on my 23 mile commute, which if I take the freeways is about 1.5 hours, but where you are going, the best way is to stay on the freeway. My guess is that if you leave S.D. about 2, you'll get to Irvine by about 4, and get through Los Angeles by 6:30 or 7, and your trip up the coast to Morro Bay will take another 4-5 hours. I am going on record and predicting you will arrive in Morro Bay between 11 and midnight. But you will love Morro Bay, so the trip will be worth it.

Bad, really bad as usual. Alternatives are jet, or chopper.
